Chapter 68

Aurora mused, "So Jaxon relies on my mother, then abandons her." Once she regained her composure, she extracted key information from the staff member's words. "Did you say Jaxon's company is about to go public?"

The staff member, ignoring her mention of Jaxon's name, smiled and replied, "Yes. Crawford Furniture Company, in which he holds shares, has completed its second round of financing. If all goes well, it could be listed by the end of next year."

Aurora fell silent. Jaxon's company primarily sold mid- to high-end furniture, but she hadn't heard of this in her previous life. At that time, they had acquired medical materials and prescriptions, believing the pharmaceutical business more profitable, and had already transitioned. Now that Victoria's inheritance was securely in Aurora's hands, Jaxon naturally needed other ways to boost the company's development.

"Do you know why my mother went to Bradley Mountain?" Aurora asked.

The staff member quickly answered, "I don't know," but added, "We inferred from police records that she had been to Bradley Mountain. Ms. Whitaker disappeared there without a struggle. No one knows what Ms. Whitaker was doing in Bradley Mountain."

The law firm found this puzzling. Victoria should have been recovering from childbirth, not trekking to Bradley Mountain.

"One last question," Aurora said, suppressing her chaotic thoughts. "Where is my mother's family?" Someone couldn't simply appear out of nowhere, yet Aurora had never met Victoria's family.

Holding her breath, Aurora awaited the Lizzie Law Firm's response. The person said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Crawford, we couldn't find anything. We only discovered that Ms. Whitaker came to Mereida alone and did not use public transportation."

This implied Victoria hadn't arrived via trains, planes, or buses, but through anonymous means. Even if she had used public transport, surveillance technology a decade ago wouldn't have allowed tracing her origin.

"Did you find any photos of her?" Aurora pressed.

"No," the staff member replied before hanging up.

The beeping sound echoed in the quiet laboratory. Aurora remained dazed, mindlessly scrolling her mouse, her gaze unfocused. After some time, her phone beeped—a spam message. When she checked the time, it was eight in the evening.

Chapter 68 (continued)

Emma mused, "It's strange. Ms. Crawford is family. Why weren't they informed about Mrs. Crawford and Ms. Maura Crawford leaving?" However, that morning, Ms. Maura Crawford returned from Mereida High School looking pale. Perhaps her condition worsened, prompting their hasty departure.

The next morning, Aurora came downstairs in sportswear. Jaxon, at the dining table, lectured her, "You should study at home on weekends and not hang out with those people."

Aurora thought, He acts like I'm a delinquent. He doesn't acknowledge my top ranking at Mereida High School. He'd prefer Maura to excel.

Aurora bit her lip, grabbing a piece of bread and walking away. Jaxon, displeased, called, "Where are you going?"

"For a walk," Aurora replied, without turning. Mentioning Bradley Mountain would surely stop him, and she wanted no interference.

Chapter 69

Aurora exited Crawford Manor.
