Chapter 284

Freya felt safe only near Odalys.

"This house was probably chosen for you intentionally," Odalys said, walking ahead. "The price was discounted, and there were problems from the start. Your room is in a death position."

She pulled back the curtains and opened the window, reaching outside. Freya nervously followed. When Odalys’ hand withdrew from the window, she held several tattered talismans, worn by sun and wind.

“I was right. This house had no initial problems, but someone tampered with the energy field to ensure you moved in. Your room is in a dead spot,” Odalys explained calmly. “Moreover, these talismans are outside. If you stay, your health will slowly decline. You’ll feel utterly exhausted and want to go home. It’s like slow poison; it weakens you, and any problems won't be obviously linked to the house.”

Freya staggered back, shocked, and collapsed onto the bed.

Odalys said matter-of-factly, “You seem destined for a great life, but your luck has been poor lately. You faced danger and romantic trouble in the village. Your luck should be better. I can't understand why Sophia stole your resources. It's the house; living here drains your good fortune.”

She started to leave, and Freya hurriedly followed.

“There’s another room. Why didn’t you stay there?” Odalys asked, opening the door to a study. The energy here was vastly different from the bedroom; it was positive.

“I planned to live here, but the window broke, and it rained. So, I moved. I left my things there and never bothered to move them,” Freya said shakily, fear growing. The coincidences felt deliberate; she’d been set up.

“Odalys, I won’t die, right?” Freya asked, trailing behind, nervously tugging at Odalys’ clothes like a frightened child.

Odalys smiled, her expression softening. “You won’t die, but your luck is diminished. You’re easier to manipulate. However, something bad could happen if you stay.”

Dread filled Freya’s large apartment. She wanted to leave immediately, preferring a hotel.

“Who wants to hurt me? I just wanted my own place. I was adopted by the Stewarts, but I didn’t want to rely on them. I wanted to stand on my own,” Freya murmured, confused. She was usually resourceful.

Odalys turned, gently lifting Freya’s chin. She studied Freya’s delicate face, her skin glowing like a young noblewoman’s.

“Edie,” Odalys whispered. Freya remembered Edie’s recent outburst.

Freya closed her eyes, feeling fear and confusion. “Does she hate me that much? Because her husband likes my mother? But my mother is married to my father! Could my parents’ deaths have been an accident?” Even Freya found the words frightening. She’d always believed their deaths were accidental.

Odalys said, “Let’s leave that aside. She knew you planned to move out of the Stewart family, so she arranged this house. She timed your move and deliberately had you stay in that room. This shows she’s wary of you and wants to harm you, but can’t do it openly. When I arrived, I could tell she’d lived here before. She must have been unlucky herself, so she moved in first, using your energy to nourish herself.” Freya was born wealthy, but Edie wasn’t.

“Nourish herself? So, after my luck weakens, she gets stronger? Is there a way to break this?” Freya’s voice trembled. She was scared. Anyone would be.

“The talismans I destroyed broke the spell, but you should move out tonight,” Odalys said firmly.

Freya immediately began packing.

“Ah!” Freya screamed. Odalys rushed in to find Freya staring at a doll; needles and talismans were attached. Odalys examined it.

“How did this end up in my wardrobe? I’ve never seen it before,” Freya said, pointing. She wouldn’t have noticed it if she hadn’t been packing.

“This is your birth chart. Someone is harming you urgently,” Odalys said.

As Odalys reached for the doll, it spontaneously combusted.

“Who?” Freya whispered hoarsely.

Odalys looked at her, speaking carefully. “Your agent.” She added, “But she’s probably dead now.” The self-immolation meant the culprit would face repercussions; magical users would suffer, ordinary people would likely die.

Freya called her agent. The voice on the other end said, “Sorry, this is the hospital. The person you asked about was in a car accident. She didn’t survive surgery. Are you a family member? Please come to claim the body.”

Freya stared at Odalys, whispering, “She really died. A car accident? Her body’s at the hospital?”

“The doll was placed by your agent. She must have had easy access to your house. Find out who sent her,” Odalys said seriously. “I suspect Edie. Tonight, she tried to harm you, but I stopped her. She was kicked out of the Stewart family, so her luck is worse, and those around her will suffer misfortune. Edie is knowledgeable about these things. The agent became Edie’s scapegoat.”

From the pond at the Stewart mansion to the birth chart under the tree that caused Evander’s broken leg, there were signs of a powerful force behind Edie. Making someone a scapegoat was relatively easy.

“Edie is terrifying! What is she really trying to do?” Freya shouted in frustration. She’d never encountered someone so terrifying.

“Let’s take a few clothes; we’ll send someone for the rest later,” Odalys said practically.

Freya quickly packed some clothes and valuables. As they left, Odalys placed a talisman on the door.
