Chapter 402
Finnian deeply regretted his decision. He regretted cooperating with Sophia, and even more so, drinking her water. As a result, he was miserable. Odalys had operated on him, leaving him unable to touch water. He hadn't showered in days, and his body reeked. Penniless, he felt like a homeless man. He tried to return to the Lark family, but couldn't even get through the door. Thinking of his former wealth and the resources the Lark family had provided, he couldn't accept his downfall. He blamed Sophia for everything.
"It's none of my business that you're so useless," Sophia said furiously. The pain in her neck intensified, and blood seeped from her arm. She glanced toward the ward door, hoping a nurse would pass by. However, she saw a familiar figure: Odalys. Sophia's pupils shrank in fear. She hadn't expected to see Odalys in the middle of the night. She struggled to get up, held down by Finnian.
"Are you still trying to escape?" Finnian said. "It's useless to call Odalys now." He pressed a shard of glass harder into her arm. Sophia winced in agony. She felt drained of strength.
"Finnian, stop it," Sophia bit her lip, letting out a muffled groan. She looked up, only to find Odalys gone from the doorway. Sophia struggled to sit up and saw the ward door open. A familiar figure appeared. "Dad, help!" she cried, rushing toward Windsor and embracing him. She sought comfort, but found him unusually distant. He didn't embrace her as usual.
"Dad?" Sophia called softly. Looking into Windsor's cold eyes, she bit her lip and took a step back. Windsor took out his handkerchief, wiped his fingertips, and strode toward her. Sophia sensed danger and stepped back quickly.
"Dad, why are you looking at me like that?" Sophia felt guilty and avoided his gaze. Seeing his aged face, she thought of his high-spirited return home. He seemed a completely different person.
"You don't dare look at me? Are you afraid to look at my face?" Windsor asked, holding a cigarette.
He stood there, smoking heavily, and looking at Sophia with a faint smile. Back at the Bennett Villa that day, he'd noticed changes in his body. After making a phone call, he realized something was seriously wrong, wondering if it was because he'd broken his vow.
Since returning home, he'd only slept with Sophia once, when she'd offered herself. That's why he'd set his sights on her. After an investigation, he discovered the recent variety show was strange; Finnian's fall from grace had followed his participation. After deliberation, he contacted Finnian. The two went to the hospital in the middle of the night to test Sophia. Sophia's reaction explained everything.
Sophia said harshly, "Dad, what are you talking about? Finnian's just jealous and doesn't want to see you spoil me. He's been kicked out of the Lark family. You have to get rid of him; otherwise, the Lark family will hold a grudge against us, and the Bennett family will suffer too." She tried to pull Windsor to her side. Windsor smoked indifferently, looking at her with complicated eyes.
Windsor bit his tongue and asked, "Really? Then tell me, why, after we slept together and I divorced for you, did things turn out like this? I heard you slept with a magician before. So, except for your first time, you've been playing with men all along?"
Sophia's face turned pale. She hadn't expected Windsor to doubt her. Her eyes were red. She bit her lip, turned her head away, and tears streamed down her cheeks.
"If that's what you think, there's nothing I can do," she said. "You believe what others say, but not me?" Sophia covered her arm, watching the blood ooze out. She turned her head sarcastically and ran toward the window. "Since you don't believe me, then I'll just die. I won't be an eyesore to you." She pushed open the window and leaned out, her hand clinging to the railing.
Finnian strode over, shoved her hard, and said, "Then go ahead and die." Sophia was terrified. With a hard shove, her body flew outward. A hand grabbed her foot and pulled her back, but her body scraped against the windowsill, leaving drag marks. She was terrified. When she fell, her limbs went weak, and she trembled uncontrollably. Tears filled her eyes as she looked at Windsor innocently. She crawled to him and hugged his leg tightly.
"Daddy, please don't leave me," she pleaded. "I know I was wrong! If those men ever force me again, I'll die in front of them to keep myself pure. Even if I die, I won't ever give in to them again." Sophia sobbed uncontrollably.
Windsor looked at her, then at Finnian. "Call the person who sold you the Love Spell," he said, holding up his phone and tossing it in front of her.
Sophia froze, forgetting to fake cry. She stared blankly at Windsor, then at Finnian. Even a fool could see they were bluffing her. When did they join forces? she thought. I remember they didn't even know each other.
Sophia bit her lip and said, "What Love Spell? I don't know what you're talking about."
Windsor pinched her chin, forcing her to look up. He bent down, the indulgence gone from his eyes. "Sophia, if you continue to pretend, I will be… Since you have a way to get the Love Spell, maybe we can use it to take back everything we've lost. Otherwise, wouldn't my divorce be in vain?" He blew smoke rings at her face, and she coughed.
"I will try," Sophia said, quickly dialing a number. The call was hung up after a few rings, but she persisted. After three tries, she handed the phone back to Windsor.
