Chapter 409
“She helped the Drake couple, so she must have a close relationship with their family,” Caspian murmured.
“Why does Odalys have such strong ties with wealthy families? If I visited on her brother's behalf, they probably wouldn't refuse to help me contact her, right?” Caspian whispered, a strange longing growing within him.
His heart pounded. He needed Odalys's help—to explain everything, to tell him what to do. If these issues weren't resolved soon, he wasn't sure he'd survive; the Bennett family would certainly fall apart.
“Please, get me in touch with the Tillery or Drake family,” Caspian said, quickly dialing a number. “Tell them it's Caspian; I need to speak to them urgently.”
As he finished, a flash of light illuminated the road. Before he could react, a deafening bang erupted as another vehicle collided with his car.
He froze. The impact threw him from the car.
“Ugh,” Caspian groaned, his body hitting the ground hard.
He shook his head, trying to clear the fog. Aside from a few scratches on his arm, he was miraculously unharmed. He scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding. The car was a burning wreck, but when he saw something on the ground beside him, his breath hitched—a talisman, its edges burned to ash.
He recognized it. He'd seen Odalys use a similar talisman on Freya during a variety show.
“Is it… Odalys?” he whispered, reaching for the ashes. But a gust of wind blew them away.
Instinctively, Caspian looked up. A sleek Maybach sped past; the windows were down, and he saw Odalys's sharp profile illuminated by the streetlights. “Odalys!” he gasped, instinctively running after her.
But before he could reach her, she turned, their gazes meeting briefly.
“Consider it repayment for a past life favor—when you covered my body,” she said coldly, her voice clear despite its low volume.
Caspian froze, trying to comprehend her words. Past life? Before he could process it, the car sped away.
“Oh my god… that was terrifying,” someone nearby muttered. “That driver was lucky—if they hadn't been thrown out, they'd have been blown to pieces.”
Caspian stiffened. He had been wearing his seatbelt. Normally, he wouldn't have been ejected. But he felt the seatbelt snap, as if an invisible hand had pulled him free, saving his life. If he hadn't been thrown clear, he would have been killed in the explosion.
“Odalys, you saved me. You must care about me. You wouldn't want the Bennett family to fall apart, would you?” he muttered feverishly. “You’ll help us with the Love Spell, won’t you? You’ll help me!”
Desperately, he fumbled for his phone, only to realize it was destroyed. Panic surged as he searched for any trace of her car, but it was gone.
Moments later, the police arrived, taking his statement. Leading the group was Lee, who seemed colder than usual.
“Mr. Bennett,” Lee said, his tone detached. “We need you to clarify what happened.”
Chapter 409 (Continued)
Caspian sensed the change in Lee's attitude, but he wouldn't give up. He stepped forward, trying to sound friendly.
“Lee, Odalys helped you with cases before. She's been involved in several investigations. You must know each other. Could you use your phone to help me contact her? I really need to speak with her.”
Lee slammed his notebook shut, his gaze icy.
“Do you hear yourself?” Lee's voice was low and stern. “Who I know is none of your concern. Are you implying you have inside knowledge about our investigations? Do you think you know how we work?”
He paused, then continued with disbelief. “And why would I help you contact Odalys? You don't even share a last name. Who knows what your relationship is? Did you get into that crash on purpose? You'd better explain yourself.”
His tone was polite, but his words were a rebuke. The other officers exchanged glances. They seemed sympathetic to Caspian, but Lee's authority silenced them.
Caspian stood dumbfounded. He hadn't expected Lee to be so stubborn.
Just then, Henry appeared, rushing toward him, clearly frustrated. Seeing Caspian's disheveled state, he grabbed his arm, irritated.
“What the hell is going on here!” Henry barked. “I told you to lay low! Why are you making trouble? The Bennett Group can't afford more negative press!”
Caspian's gaze darkened. But instead of responding, he glanced behind Henry, his eyes landing on Edie.
“Henry, did you get beaten up?” Caspian asked, surprised.
Henry's face was bruised, his mouth cut, and his sleeves torn. He'd clearly been in a fight. Edie stood behind him, proud and aloof, and Henry seemed subdued in her presence.
Caspian knew who had injured Henry.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve,” Caspian sneered. “You were trying to harm Odalys, weren’t you? The Simpson family is well-connected, getting you out of jail so quickly.”
“I wouldn’t be caught dead associating with someone like you. Don’t compare yourself to Odalys,” Caspian spat.
Lee, still nearby, glanced at Edie, his expression unreadable.
