Chapter 554

Odalys circled the house, then spun abruptly. Her eyes fixed on an object beside the television, and Percival followed her gaze.

"A locator," I said coldly. Percival nodded.

Odalys picked up a gift box, revealing a flickering red dot. Shocked, Zoe rushed over. Her heart pounded.

"Why is there a locator?" she whispered, her voice hoarse with fear. She was at a loss.

"Mrs. Hersey, think," Odalys asked, "did any stranger come to your apartment?"

This building was reserved for police officers and their families; few outsiders had access.

"Stranger?" Zoe murmured. "The TV broke yesterday, so I had a repairman."

Her eyes widened. "Did the repairman leave the locator?" Scared, she collapsed, then quickly composed herself, her pride preventing her from becoming a laughingstock before Odalys and Percival. She hated humiliating herself and her husband, but her fear and panic were evident.

"Give me his phone number," Percival said, his voice deep.

Zoe retrieved her phone, found the number, and gave it to Percival. He left, made a call, and returned.

"Can this locator be removed?" Zoe asked.

A flash of ferocity crossed Odalys's eyes as she stared at the device. "Relax, Mrs. Hersey. I'll deal with it."

Norah ran from her room, clutching the flower Odalys had given her. "Odalys, look! I kept the flower!" she exclaimed. Odalys smiled at the excited girl.

"Well done, Norah. What do you think of a new gift?"

Norah's eyes lit up. Discreetly, she tugged at Zoe's clothes. "Mommy, can I accept it? Odalys already bought us fruits and toys; it cost her a lot of money."

Zoe's lips moved; she hesitated. If the gift protected Norah, she'd accept; otherwise, she wouldn't.

"Hey, don't blink," Odalys said, pulling Norah closer. She reached into her bag, rummaged, and produced a small snake. The snake darted to the ceiling, then gracefully landed on Odalys's palm.

"Wow, it's a small snake, just like the one on my arm!" Norah shouted, pointing. She quickly rolled up her sleeve to show the matching snake. Zoe took a few steps back; she dreaded snakes. It was true: the snake on Norah's arm looked identical to the one on Odalys's palm.

Her response was understandable.

"Mrs. Hersey, don't be afraid. It won't bite. It's intelligent and has psychic power," Odalys explained.

Zoe remained distant. "Is it the gift for Norah?" she asked softly.

Odalys squatted. "Stay here for a week. I'll pick you up after I'm done. Follow her wherever she goes, and protect her when necessary."

The snake, seemingly still waking, looked blankly at Odalys, then around the room. After a moment, it seemed to understand. Its eyes closed. With a whoosh, it wrapped itself around Norah's leg, climbed to her arm, and nestled on her shoulder.

"Wow, it doesn't bite!" Norah said, surprised. She gently poked the sleeping snake.

Seeing this, Zoe approached cautiously, convinced the snake was harmless.

"Don't worry, Mrs. Hersey. It doesn't bite. It might help in danger. Don't feed it; it won't eat."

Zoe nodded, having watched Odalys's shows and livestreams. She knew Odalys was skilled in magic and trusted her husband's judgment. "Thank you, Ms. Store."

A knock sounded. Percival opened the door. A bodyguard entered, throwing a sack onto the floor. He kicked it. "Stay put," he said, then turned to Percival. "Mr. Stewart, it's done. No one knows he's here; the shop's surveillance videos are destroyed." He added, "I already sent you the videos."

Percival nodded slightly; the bodyguard left. The bodyguard's arrival and departure were swift. Zoe suspected a struggling man was inside. Before she could speak, Percival opened the sack.

The man inside gasped for air.

"It's him! The repairman!" Zoe exclaimed, pointing. The man had fixed her TV. He looked around, his heart sinking.

"Your life or death. Choose one," Odalys said coldly. Before the repairman could speak, Odalys kicked him hard. She then lifted him by the hair. "Look! What is this place? The home of police officers. What do police officers do? They uphold justice. They brave danger to protect this city; some sacrifice themselves. Do you know that?"

The repairman was startled, his face flushed. Before he could speak, Odalys pushed him to the ground. He groaned, gritting his teeth.

"Do you know her husband has narrowly escaped death investigating the truth? He lost flesh from his leg chasing a drug dealer?"

Astonishment filled the repairman's eyes.

"You took advantage of his absence to install a locator. Aren't you ashamed of preying on a woman and a seven-year-old?" Odalys demanded.
