Chapter 50
When Naomi wasn't relentlessly pestering Brendan, he complained that she was acting strangely. But when she teased or flirted, he called her cheap and shameless. Since he disliked her, everything she did was wrong. Therefore, she should simply remain quiet. She would agree to whatever he wanted.
Naomi's acquiescence only made Brendan more unhappy. He'd have preferred a loud argument to the silent treatment.
He stared at her and asked, "Why do I find it hard to believe Maximus has no other intentions toward you?"
Naomi laughed at his absurdity. It had been two years since Maximus's last visit.
Crossing her arms, Naomi smiled. "Shouldn't I ask you the same thing? With your influence, you could have secured Chloe a job anywhere. Why specifically assign her to Ludwig Corporation as a secretary? Just because you operate a certain way, do you assume everyone else does?"
Brendan was speechless. His gaze softened slightly as he asked, "Are you still bothered about her?"
Naomi smiled. "Who am I to concern myself with your actions? I'd appreciate it if you didn't cause me trouble."
For over two years, Naomi hadn't argued with him about non-relationship matters. Her principle was to focus on major issues and ignore trivial ones. As long as Brendan wanted children, it was enough. But now, wanting no children, he was no longer useful to her.
Seeing her apathy, Brendan said coldly, "Naomi, you're not fit to be Mrs. Ludwig."
Following his lead, Naomi sighed. "After two years of marriage, I still haven't given you a child. I'm indeed unqualified!"
Brendan's expression immediately soured; he felt she was mocking him. He abruptly got out of bed, tightened his robe, and said, "I'm not arguing with you." He opened the bedroom door and left. Naomi glanced at the door, smirked, sat at the table, and resumed her work.
Shortly afterward, her phone rang. It was Heather.
Chapter 50
"Naomi, are you home? Brendan's home too, right?" Heather asked.
"He just went out," Naomi replied.
Heather's voice rose. "Why'd he go out again? Hasn't he been staying home lately?"
Before Naomi could answer, Heather continued seriously, "Naomi, this isn't good for you two. If this continues, it won't end well. You need to have his child. A man is more likely to stay when he has a child. Furthermore…"
Realizing she might hurt Naomi, Heather stopped. But she silently fretted over the fortune tellers who'd said only Naomi could bear Brendan's child. Why couldn't Naomi take this seriously? If she were in Naomi's shoes, she'd be agonizing over it. How could Naomi still be focused on work?
Naomi typed, "I know, Mom. I've considered it."
Regarding her relationship with Brendan, Naomi didn't dare think about it too much. Conceiving a child would be a miracle.
Heather said, "I'll call Brendan and talk to him." She hung up and called him.
Immediately, she yelled, "Brendan, did you go out again? You left right after Naomi came home. What's wrong with you?"
