Chapter 52
After Naomi heard Mason’s explanation, her expression changed. “He’s heartbroken? I’m perfectly fine, and I’ve never cheated on him. Who broke his heart?” she asked.
Mason replied, “I guess it wasn’t you.”
Naomi was speechless. She had wondered why Brendan had been coming home so late lately, even in the middle of the night. It turned out Chloe had been giving him the cold shoulder, putting him in a bad mood. No wonder he always looked gloomy.
Naomi crossed her arms, looked down at Brendan, and kicked him.
“Naomi, don’t!” Mason quickly stopped her. “Don’t kick him, or I’ll take the blame tomorrow. He’ll say I kicked him. Also, help me! I can’t carry him alone.”
Naomi said, “Why should I? He’s heartbroken, but not because of me. He’s lucky I haven’t thrown him out.”
Just as she finished speaking, Brendan tried to stand, placing his hands on the couch, but sat back down.
Seeing this, Mason sighed. “He’s been sulking for days. Everyone thinks he’s going through a breakup, and I do too.”
Naomi smiled sarcastically. Brendan heartbroken? What a feat. It didn’t matter whether it was Chloe or someone else; it wasn’t her problem.
“Where’s Chloe? Have you seen them together lately?” Naomi asked.
“I haven’t,” Mason said. “They probably fought. That’s why Brendan’s in a bad mood. I’ve never seen him like this before.”
Naomi coldly withdrew her gaze, took out her phone, and called Chloe. “Chloe, come to Yellowind Bay.” She hung up without waiting for a response.
Mason asked, “Why did you call Chloe?” He’d brought Brendan back to Yellowind Bay to create an opportunity for Naomi. Couldn’t she see that?
Naomi set her phone aside. “Whoever started this mess should fix it. I’m not solving Brendan’s alcohol addiction or emotional problems.”
“Be careful,” Mason said. “Do you really not want to be with Brendan anymore?”
Naomi smiled. “If his heart isn’t here, caution won’t help. Besides, doesn’t absence make the heart grow fonder? The more I try to stop them, the closer they become. After all these years, I’m too lazy to intervene. They can handle their own issues. Brendan can make his own choices.”
Brendan mumbled something drunkenly, frowning. Naomi couldn’t hear him, so she asked Mason.
“Chloe,” Mason said. “He’s looking for Chloe.”
Naomi laughed. She was almost moved by his deep affection. If Brendan knew how much Mason had helped, he’d surely “thank” him tomorrow.
Half an hour later, Chloe arrived, disheveled, still in her pajamas and slippers. “Naomi, what happened to Brendan?” she asked anxiously.
Seeing Chloe’s immediate response, Naomi felt like an outsider. Glancing at Brendan, she said, “He drank too much. Mason says it’s because of you. Handle it.”
Chloe’s expression changed. “Naomi, is there a misunderstanding?”
“I’ll be upstairs,” Naomi said. “If you need help, ask for Jennifer.” She left.
