Chapter 56
Mason hadn't finished his sentence when Brendan chuckled. "Of course I need to thank you," he said. "Ronald needs manpower, and I think you'd be a great fit. It's an opportunity for you to gain experience."
Mason's face paled. "Brendan, are you repaying a favor or taking revenge? That place isn't fit for humans…"
Before Mason could finish, Brendan called Jason. "Jason, help Mr. Stone prepare to leave."
Mason was close to tears. "Brendan, what have I done wrong? I'll change! I'll change, okay?"
Brendan replied, "Is it because you and Chloe haven't reconciled yet? Why don't you try to make amends? I talked to Naomi yesterday, and she said she won't force you to do anything. She wants you to resolve your issues on your own. She even called Chloe to help. She'll respect your decision."
Brendan's expression soured as Mason spoke.
After Mason finished, Jason entered, saying solemnly, "Mr. Stone, your train ticket is booked. Mr. Ronald will pick you up at the station."
"Brendan, what have I done wrong?" Mason cried, distraught at the prospect of being sent to Ronald.
Escorted from Brendan's office by Jason, Mason called Reuben and others, but they offered no help, only advising him to take care of himself. Finally, he called his mother, hoping for her intervention.
Mrs. Stone, playing cards, replied, "Mason, I think Brendan's decision is excellent. You're often immature. It's a good opportunity for you to gain experience. Your father and I are very grateful to Brendan. With your father handling things at the company, you can rest assured!"
Mason was dumbfounded, feeling like an outcast.
Brendan, observing Mason's sadness from his office, felt satisfaction. When had Mason gotten drunk over Chloe? Who allowed him to blabber to Naomi? Thinking of Naomi's confident indifference that morning, Brendan's expression darkened again.
Chapter 55
Since Maximus's return, Naomi's attitude had changed. She had even sent him away. Was she seeking a divorce? If so, she was naive.
Around 8:00 p.m., as Brendan and Chloe returned to Yellowind Bay, Naomi was walking downstairs.
"Naomi," Chloe greeted her.
"Ms. Goodwin," Jason greeted awkwardly, carrying Chloe's luggage.
Naomi gave them an indifferent nod and continued walking, pouring herself water as if nothing was amiss, ignoring them.
Chloe explained, "Naomi, Brendan said you're not in a good mood, so he asked me to keep you company."
Naomi understood Chloe was trying to smooth things over after Brendan's actions.
Jason, standing behind them, felt awkward, unable to grasp the unfolding drama.
Brendan said coldly, "Don't be afraid of her." To Jason, he instructed, "Jason, take the luggage to the master bedroom."
Jason started to speak, but stopped at Brendan's icy glare. "Of course," he quickly said.
As Jason passed Naomi, his eyes held sympathy. He felt it might truly be over for them.
