Chapter 1001:
Theo shook his head. โIโm at a loss too.โ Elyse speculated, โBy sharing this, are you suggestingโโ Before Theo could answer, the study door burst open, and Louise tumbled in.
Elyse gazed silently at the obviously pained Louise, then asked, โYou were eavesdropping, werenโt you?โ
โOf course not,โ Louise responded quickly. โI am a princess. Eavesdropping is beneath me.โ She struggled to her feet, striving to regain her composure. โI came to announce that dinner is ready,โ she declared.
Elyse rose gracefully. โThen letโs proceed to dinner.โ
Louiseโs face tensed. โDo you wish to dine now? Perhaps you could continue your discussion a bit longer?โ
โIโm quite hungry,โ Elyse answered. โWe can resume our talk after dinner, if necessary.โ
Louise seemed perturbed. โMaybe you could wait just a little longer?โ
As Louise averted her gaze, Elyse smiled knowingly. โYou were listening, werenโt you?โ
โI was not!โ Louise protested, flustered and upset. Hurrying toward the door, she proclaimed loudly, โIโve already explained that a princess would never behave in such a manner. You may carry on with your conversation.โ
Elyse laughed softly and turned to Theo, who was thoughtfully stroking his chin. โA princess? Her brother has recently been embroiled in a conflict with militants and has gone missing, yet she appears unaffected.โ
Elyse paused, reflecting. โThe brother youโre referring to must be Chesney. I doubt heโs the one you meant.โ Theo realized they were discussing members of a different family branch.
โIf that man doesnโt return, Louise and Chesney would stand to inherit, wouldnโt they?โ
Theo, deeming it irrelevant to Elyse, shifted the conversation back to Mabel.
Later that evening, after dinner, Elyse removed Theo from her blacklistโa decision not made lightly or recently. After bidding Theo farewell, Elyse returned to her room to relax, only to find Louise covertly trailing her. In a hushed tone, Louise inquired, โWhat were you and Theo discussing earlier?โ
Elyse chuckled. โDidnโt you say you werenโt eavesdropping?โ
Louise, unable to contain her frustration, exclaimed, โYou were speaking too softly. I couldnโt catch a word.โ . . .
