Chapter 1148:
The coach offered an explanation, his reassuring tone calming. โWe canโt be certain what startled itโperhaps an insect struck a sensitive area. The horse seems calm now.โ
Elyse gazed up at the now-docile animal, a rueful smile playing on her lips. โI suppose horseback riding isnโt my forte after all.โ
Edward, with worry written all over his face, had been so engrossed in his own enjoyment that heโd neglected to properly oversee Elyse, especially as a beginner.
A wave of remorse engulfed Edward. โForgive me. All of this is my fault.โ
Elyse shook her head gently at his pleading, a soft chuckle escaping her. โEdward, this isnโt your fault. Itโs just bad luck. Sometimes it happens.โ
Steadying herself against the fence, she rose to her feet. โBesides, you were quite the vision on that horse. I couldnโt take my eyes away from you.โ
Edward scratched his head, his voice taking on a hint of uncertainty. โYou think so? In that case, why donโt I keep you company for a bit? Once youโre feeling better, you can look forward to another show.โ
Elyse smiled. โThat does sound tempting, but rein it back a little this time. No more reckless stunts just to show off, understood?โ
Edward readily nodded. โAlright, donโt worry.โ
As the coach brought over a chair for Elyse, a thought belatedly struck her. โWhat about the person who rescued me?โ she asked. โWhere did he go?โ
Edward shook his head. โI donโt know. He was already gone when I got here.โ
Elyseโs gaze shifted to the coach.
He turned thoughtful and said, โAfter he saved you and brought you here, he rode off on a black horse.โ
Edwardโs brow creased in confusion. โJust like that? He saved someone, then just vanished into thin air? What did he look like?โ Elyse pressed.
The coach furrowed his forehead as he recalled. โQuite tall, but he had a mask on, so I couldnโt make out his face.โ
โA masked face,โ Elyse mused, getting lost in contemplation.
Ten minutes later, Elyseโs fears were completely dispelled.
โThis time, it looks like we switched to one that I can handle,โ Edward said. โDonโt go anywhere near that horse.โ
โA horse that matches her skill level?โ The coach scratched his chin thoughtfully. โActually, yes. We have something for her. Just wait here, and Iโll bring the horse to you.โ
His words brought out a sigh of relief from Elyse. โThank goodness. Thereโs no way I could have managed that one. Itโs way too spirited for me.โ
โYou just suck, noob,โ Edward teased.
Elyse snorted, her eyes gleaming with mischief and challenge. โOh really? If youโre so great, why donโt you show me now that itโs done? Or are you just all talk?โ
Edward took the bait, cracking his knuckles as he answered, โWatch and learn, rookie. And try not to be too impressed, yeah?โ With that, he made an exceedingly flamboyant show of mounting his horse, then galloped off.
