Chapter 1178:

Louise, looking weary, slumped beside Elyse on the sofa, sighing, โ€œI donโ€™t want lunch; I want snacks.โ€

Elyse reassured her, โ€œGarret mentioned a supply truck will arrive later today, and he asked me to take you to pick out some snacks.โ€

Louise responded with little interest, a glimmer of listlessness remaining as she leaned against the sofa.

With neither speaking, Elyse turned her gaze to the window, staring into the forest, her eyes filled with a distant longing.

โ€œAre you thinking about Jayden?โ€ Louiseโ€™s voice cut through her thoughts.

Elyseโ€™s gaze remained fixed on the trees as she replied, โ€œSort of. Thereโ€™s something else weighing on meโ€”a question thatโ€™s been on my mind for ages.โ€

โ€œWhat question?โ€ Louise asked, sipping from a glass of water.

โ€œJayden isnโ€™t exactly a man of good character. He lies and keeps secrets. In any real relationship, isnโ€™t trust supposed to be the foundation? But he doesnโ€™t trust anyone. Heโ€™s controlling, demanding, and expects nothing but my compliance. Whenever I push back, his temper flares.โ€

Louiseโ€™s expression grew thoughtful. โ€œFrom what youโ€™re saying, he seems riddled with flaws. Does he have any redeeming qualities?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s wealthy, clever, and solves problems like itโ€™s second nature, but none of those things really matter to me,โ€ Elyse answered, reflecting.

Louise studied her, then smiled gently. โ€œSo, can you live with his faults?โ€

Elyse looked out the window, lost in her own conflicted thoughts before finally murmuring, โ€œEven though being with him is hard and heโ€™s hurt me, somehow, I believe I can.โ€

As she spoke, a look of self-loathing crossed her face. โ€œI feel like such a fool. Heโ€™s treated me like this, and still, I accept it. There must be something wrong with me. Itโ€™s as if Iโ€™ve fractured into pieces. I despise who Iโ€™ve become.โ€

Louise placed her glass down, her lips curving into a wry smile. โ€œBut you know, love is what stops you from being yourself.โ€

After Louise finished, she caught sight of the bewildered look on Elyseโ€™s face and, with a playful smile, asked, โ€œWhy do you look like that? You do know what love is, right? Didnโ€™t your parents ever explain it to you?โ€

Elyse shifted uncomfortably and murmured, โ€œMy parentsโ€ฆ they passed away when I was very young. My uncle and aunt raised me, and they never talked about love.โ€

Louise gazed at her for a moment, as if putting the puzzle pieces together. โ€œAh, no wonder youโ€™re a little off. I think Iโ€™ve finally found the root of it.โ€

Feeling the weight of Louiseโ€™s eyes on her, Elyse quickly lowered her head, trying to escape that probing stare. Louise softened and gently touched Elyseโ€™s shoulder, her tone turning serious. โ€œDo you love yourself?โ€

Elyseโ€™s entire body stiffened, a shiver running through her as confusion clouded her features even more.

โ€œBefore you can figure out if you love Jayden, you need to understand if you love yourself,โ€ Louise said earnestly. โ€œWhen you love yourself, youโ€™ll know if you love someone else.โ€

This notion struck Elyse, leaving her shaken. In all her years, no one had ever told her to love herself. The words hit her as both a revelation and a delayed understanding. It dawned on her: she didnโ€™t love herself.

A heavy silence filled the space between them. Louise didnโ€™t push further, leaving Elyse to her thoughts.

After what seemed like an eternity, Elyse broke the silence, her voice low and reflective. โ€œI didnโ€™t expect you to understand all this so well.โ€

Louise, feeling a sense of pride, straightened. โ€œOf course! Iโ€™m a master of all trades, especially when it comes to love.โ€

A bitter smile tugged at the corners of Elyseโ€™s mouth. โ€œBut when you really experience love, all that stuff you know can just disappear. When itโ€™s true love, your mind goes blank, and all you can think about is the person right in front of you.โ€

Louise nodded knowingly. โ€œYouโ€™re right. Loveโ€™s a tricky magicianโ€”it makes everything else disappear.โ€
