Chapter 177:
After leaving Merlinโs office, Elyse lingered in the corridor, waiting for Darren instead of returning directly to the practice room.
A few minutes later, Darren emerged, looking glum. As soon as the office door closed behind him, Elyse hurried over, her concern evident. โAre you okay?โ
Darren shook his head, his expression somber. โIโm fine, but Iโve told the director, and heโs not going to intervene for me anymore.โ
Elyse nodded understandingly. โRight now, only a few of us know about this. If it gets out, everyone in the orchestra will demand answers from him.โ
Darren sighed with relief. โYeah, I donโt need my uncle risking his neck for me. Itโs a shame, really. I had planned to call him out tomorrow during the selection process for breaking the rules, but you stopped that,โ Vicky said regretfully.
They turned to see Vicky leaning against the wall, arms crossed, a mischievous grin on her face. Vicky, whose instructor was the assistant director, had known Darren for years. She laughed unrestrainedly. โEveryone thinks youโre average. If your uncle werenโt so influential, you wouldnโt even be competing against me.โ
Darren frowned. โSo you know everything?โ
Vicky chuckled. โIf you donโt want me to know something, donโt do it. There are no secrets where Iโm concerned.โ
Elyse remained silent. She knew the director and assistant director had been rivals for years, and their apprentices mirrored this rivalry. Vicky sauntered over, casting a disdainful glance at Darren before fixing her gaze on Elyse. Towering over Elyse in her high heels, she looked down with contempt. โAnd I didnโt expect you to be so soft-hearted, letting your competitors off the hook. Youโre the most irritating person in this competition.โ
Elyse sneered. โMy actions ruined your plans and your instructorโs chances for promotion, didnโt they? Actually, you donโt want fair competition; you only want to benefit from it.โ
โFair competition? You think you can compete fairly with me? The rules only give you the illusion of a chance,โ Vicky raised her chin defiantly, especially at Elyse. โYou think your little talent is enough to beat me?โ
Unhappy with Vickyโs attitude, Darren intervened. โWell, considering sheโs tied with you for first place, it seems youโre not that much better than she is.โ
Vicky hated this. She shot Darren a venomous look. โNot convinced, are you? Just wait and see. Iโll show you,โ she spat before striding away.
Watching Vickyโs arrogant departure, Elyse felt a surge of irritation. โSo what if Vickyโs instructor is the assistant director?โ
Glancing at Vickyโs retreating figure, Darren shook his head. โVickyโs always been like thisโarrogant and self-absorbed. Even though sheโs mellowed slightly, sheโs still the same old Vicky.โ
Darren explained that heโd first met Vicky at a party Merlin had forced him to attend. Since Merlin and the assistant director were rivals, Darren and Vicky had been pitted against each other in a violin competition. After that party, Darren gained another enemy: Vicky. Theyโd been secretly competing for years. While Vicky, usually overconfident, always performed well, Darren occasionally underperformed.
Darren rubbed his temples, reflecting on the past. โEven though Vicky has a temper, sheโs talented. She might actually beat me tomorrow.โ
Elyse looked at him for a moment. โYouโre being too hard on yourself. You need more self-belief. I know youโre gifted.โ
Darren looked at her thoughtfully. โDo you really think Iโm gifted?โ
โThink about it. Even when youโre not at your best, youโre still in the top five,โ Elyse said. โIf you overcome this self-doubt, youโll do better.โ
Darren nodded, deep in thought. โIโve never looked at it that way.โ
Elyse gave him an encouraging pat on the shoulder. โBeat Vicky tomorrow. Show her what youโre capable of.โ
