Chapter 269:
Aylin Watts, the agent, hesitated, hand on the glass, before asking nonchalantly, "You mean you wrote the tracks on Mabel's new album?"
"Absolutely," Elyse responded assertively. "I wrote them. I even wrote her debut song, the one that launched her career. Weren't you aware of that?"
Aylin smiled. "Oh yes, I recall now. You were the composer." She took a sip of water, then added, "Mabel is fortunate to have such a supportive sister. Thanks to your efforts, she's made quite an impact in the music industry."
Elyse sensed an implication. Narrowing her eyes, she probed cautiously, "Aylin, what exactly are you implying?"
"I'm simply acknowledging your contribution," Aylin clarified quickly. "Mabel is lucky to have a sister who backs her musically."
Elyse offered a sarcastic smile. "If that's true, why didn't you attribute the composer's name to me instead of giving it to Mabel?"
Aylin gently patted Elyse's hand. "Don't overthink it. We maintain Mabel's image as an original artist; it's essential she be credited as the songwriter."
Elyse sharply withdrew her hand, a devilish grin spreading across her face. One look told her Aylin was trying to scam her. "So, Mabel is using my work without my permission? That sounds like theft to me."
Caught off guard, Aylin attempted to take Elyse's hand again, but Elyse resisted. With an awkward laugh, Aylin suggested, "You're family. Let's not be too harsh. We can discuss this."
"Yes, let's discuss," Elyse agreed.
Relieved, Aylin sighed. "Exactly. You're sisters. Why the hard stance?"
"I want the new album canceled, and she needs to apologize," Elyse demanded firmly.
Aylin was taken aback. The album was already released; cancellation was impossible, and it would mean a significant loss for the company.
Aylin rolled her eyes, shifting her tone. "You're right. The mistake was on our part. We should have finalized the composer's credit before release."
She subtly changed the subject. "However, you possess superior appearance and talent. Have you ever considered a solo career with our company? Under my guidance, you could surpass Mabel."
A glimmer flickered in Elyse's eyes. "Are you suggesting I sign with your company?"
Sensing Elyse's interest, Aylin quickly left the meeting room, returning shortly with a contract. "Here's an exclusive artist contract. Exceptionally favorable terms."
Elyse skimmed the document, then looked up at Aylin. "If I sign this, will you help me reclaim my songs?"
Aylin thumped her chest confidently. "Absolutely. I've always seen your potential. Remember, I contacted you a year ago, but you declined. I'm just as serious now." She handed Elyse a pen.
Aylin showered Elyse with compliments, emphasizing her bright future, but Elyse remained skeptical of Aylin's urgency. She began to read the contract carefully.
Noticing this, Aylin quickly said, "I've worked with Mabel for a year. Do you think I'd deceive you? Trust me."
Despite Aylin's reassurances, Elyse remained skeptical. She found a clause stating she would relinquish the rights to three songs to Mabel, granting her unrestricted use and composer credit.
Elyse slammed the document on the table, fixing Aylin with a piercing gaze. "You wouldn't try to scam me."
Caught in her deceit, Aylin's embarrassment was palpable. "The songs are already released," she admitted bluntly. "To cancel the album, you'll have to accept the financial losses for my company." ...
