Chapter 354:

Leaving home and arriving at the shopping mall, Elyse serendipitously discovered a cozy cafรฉ and settled in. She ordered a caramel latte, savoring each sip. Lost in thought, a familiar voice startled her.

โ€œHello, Ms. Lloyd. Mind if I join you?โ€

Elyse looked up, surprised to see Pearce. โ€œWhat a coincidence!โ€ she exclaimed.

โ€œYeah, what a coincidence,โ€ Pearce echoed, smiling as he sat opposite her. He signaled a waiter for an iced Americano, then turned to Elyse with a quizzical look. โ€œWhat have you been up to? I went to Celestial Sounds Symphony hoping to see you, but learned youโ€™d left.โ€

Elyse nodded somberly. โ€œI was dismissed. Thereโ€™s no recourse,โ€ she said, a resigned smile touching her lips.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Pearce asked, genuinely curious.

Elyse poured out her grievances. Sheโ€™d remained silent when Tracy and Morgan visited, wanting to spare them worry.

Elyseโ€™s words ignited Pearceโ€™s anger. He slammed his hand on the table. โ€œSuch shameless individuals! Envious of your talent, they pushed you out!โ€

Elyse offered a bitter smile. โ€œMy musical background isnโ€™t strong. Itโ€™s understandable they wanted me gone.โ€

The waiter arrived with Pearceโ€™s Americano. After a sip, Pearce asked, โ€œWhat made you leave the orchestra before?โ€

Elyseโ€™s smile faltered. โ€œPersonal reasons,โ€ she replied vaguely.

Pearceโ€™s tone softened. โ€œIf you consider me a friend, be honest. Iโ€™ve reached out before, but heard nothing. Iโ€™ve been worried.โ€

Unaware of the intervening events, Pearce had tried to contact Elyse, even sending someone to investigate, but found nothing; the truth seemed deliberately obscured.

After a moment, Elyse sighed heavily. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I canโ€™t share it.โ€

Pearce hid his disappointment. โ€œThatโ€™s alright,โ€ he said, accepting her answer.

โ€œThank you for understanding,โ€ Elyse murmured, tracing the rim of her cup.

Pearce observed her somber mood, its cause unknown. Cautiously, he asked, โ€œWhat are your plans now?โ€

Elyse looked up, her decision seemingly spontaneous. โ€œI want to go somewhere,โ€ she declared determinedly.

Sensing her need for company, Pearce offered, โ€œWhere? Iโ€™m free. I can drive you.โ€

After a pause, Elyse said, โ€œCould you take me to the cemeteries?โ€

Pearce was taken aback. โ€œWhy? Are you buying a plot?โ€

Elyse fell silent.

Pearce respected her silence. Standing, he said gently, โ€œThere are several beautiful cemeteries. Iโ€™ll take you.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Elyse said gratefully.

Pearce chuckled warmly. โ€œMy pleasure. I always enjoy your company.โ€

Elyseโ€™s expression became serious. โ€œMr. Benson, Iโ€™m married. Please avoid such comments.โ€

โ€œSorry. I forgot,โ€ Pearce confessed, lightly tapping his nose. He felt an inexplicable connection with her. โ€œIโ€™ll be more careful,โ€ he promised.

Elyse followed him to the car. He drove her to a secluded cemetery on a hill, still under construction, within the cityโ€™s development zone.

As they entered, Elyse surveyed the scene. She stopped on the lawn, thoughtful.

Pearce followed, curious. Could she be choosing a plot for herself?

He finally asked, โ€œAre you terminally ill? Are you choosing a plot for yourself?โ€

Elyse was shocked. โ€œOf course not! Donโ€™t jump to conclusions.โ€

Pearceโ€™s confusion deepened. โ€œThen for whom?โ€

โ€œFor my parents,โ€ Elyse replied slowly.
