Chapter 408:
When Glenda heard the phone disconnect, her ingratiating smile vanished, replaced by a cold, hard expression. Lanny, eyes glued to the television screen, continued watching. "Elyse doesn't want to come," he stated.
Glenda gritted her teeth. "That ungrateful woman. I knew she would abandon us once she discovered we aren't her real parents."
Lanny sneered. "I told you to be nicer to her. Regretting it now, aren't you?"
Glenda snapped, "I'm doing this for our daughter. Even though she avoided jail, she has a criminal record. Who would marry a woman with a record? I just wanted to ask Elyse for a favor."
In her room, Habel overheard their conversation, a chill settling over her heart. After her release from the detention center that day, she learned Elyse wasn't her sisterโshe was her cousin. Now that Elyse had severed ties with Habel's family, they had to beg the very person they once controlled. Habel struggled to accept this harsh reality.
"What's Elyse so arrogant about? Just because she married a rich man, I can find someone better," she murmured, biting her nail.
Outside the door, Lanny frowned upon hearing Glenda discuss finding Habel a husband. "There's no rush. Habel can take her time. Right now, we need to ensure Dorothy doesn't wake up. If she reveals our biggest secret, we're all finished."
Glenda quickly covered his mouth, whispering, "Keep it down. Aren't you worried Habel will hear you?"
Lanny shrugged off her hand, his face twisted in disgust. "You're handling this. If I go to the hospital, I'll draw too much attention, and they'll be on high alert."
Glenda trembled. "You want me to kill Dorothy?"
Lanny's eyes were cold and cruel. "If you don't forget about Habel's marriage, your daughter will lose her future, and we'll all end up in jail."
Glenda wrestled with the decision for a moment before finally agreeing. She would do it.
In her room, Habel (the name was previously misspelled as Mabel) couldn't hear their conversation. After considering things, she texted Kaelyn, sharing her grievances and revealing that Elyse wasn't her sister. Habel didn't expect a reply, assuming Kaelyn would ignore her like everyone else in the entertainment industry had since her banishment.
To her surprise, Kaelyn called back immediately. "Elyse isn't your sister."
Touched by Kaelyn's swift response, Habel felt she'd found someone who truly cared. She poured out her heart, detailing how she discovered the truth about Elyse.
Kaelyn replied, "Isn't it strange how lucky Elyse is?"
Puzzled, Habel asked, "What do you mean?"
"Did she use witchcraft to absorb your good luck?" Kaelyn suggested. "Think about when your family's troubles began. Didn't they start when Elyse got married?"
A chill ran down Habel's spine. "So you're saying Elyse took my good luck to strengthen herself?"
The ellipses at the end are removed as they don't seem to add anything to the passage.
