Chapter 45:

โ€œDo you truly wish for me to stand?โ€ Jayden inquired calmly.

Elyse nodded earnestly. โ€œAbsolutely. You were once able-bodied. Wouldnโ€™t you like to stand again?โ€

Then, adopting a serious tone, she added, โ€œTruly, you looked so striking in my dream. I was captivated by you.โ€

Jayden lightly stroked his chin, a faint smile playing on his lips. She was indeed naive and easily swayed.

Shortly after, Driscoll returned with warm milk and placed it in front of Elyse.

โ€œThank you, Driscoll,โ€ Elyse said, settling into her chair and savoring the milkโ€™s warmth.

Observing her enjoyment, Jaydenโ€™s appetite was piqued. He had eaten alone earlier, but seeing her delight in the milk made him hungry. โ€œCould I have a serving as well?โ€ he requested.

Driscoll, aware of Jaydenโ€™s lack of appetite earlier, was pleased to see his newfound interest. He promptly went to the kitchen and returned with another glass of warm milk.

โ€œDid you eat breakfast today?โ€ Elyse asked.

โ€œI woke up too early and had no appetite,โ€ Jayden explained.

Elyse chuckled. โ€œThen youโ€™d better join me for breakfast.โ€

Jayden glanced at her, issuing a reminder. โ€œWe have a dinner party tonight. Try not to overdo it with the drinks. You were so tipsy last night that it took two maids to carry you back to your room.โ€

Elyse was startled. โ€œThat canโ€™t be. I havenโ€™t been eating much lately. I couldnโ€™t have gained weight.โ€

โ€œHow do you think you made it back to your room, then?โ€ Jayden prodded.

โ€œDidnโ€™t you carry me?โ€ she ventured tentatively.

โ€œIn your dream,โ€ he quipped.

Elyse struggled to accept this. Trying to change the subject, she playfully fed Jayden some grapes.

Accepting the offering with a faint smile, Jayden remarked, โ€œLooks like youโ€™ve gained a bit of weight, but you wonโ€™t let me say it.โ€

โ€œStop it. I donโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve gained weight,โ€ Elyse protested.

As Driscoll approached with breakfast, witnessing their playful exchange, he grinned and offered, โ€œMr. Owen, please enjoy your breakfast.โ€

Once the food was served, Elyse turned to Driscoll anxiously. โ€œDid I really gain weight? Jayden said it took two maids to carry me back to my room last night.โ€

Driscoll interjected, โ€œHeโ€™s teasing you. Youโ€™re quite slender. In fact, the chef mentioned wanting to help you put on a bit of weight a few days ago.โ€

Relieved, Elyse shot Jayden a glare. Jayden simply grinned and teased, โ€œYou really are gullible. Youโ€™ll believe anything I say, wonโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œJayden!โ€ she exclaimed, feeling a pang of embarrassment at being duped. How could he undermine her like that? It was a blow to her self-esteem.

After breakfast, as Elyse gave Jayden a massage, she couldnโ€™t resist pinching him a few times, venting her frustration.

Once she left the room, Jayden winced, rubbing the spot where sheโ€™d pinched him. โ€œSheโ€™s getting bolder.โ€

As Elyse was engrossed in studying a music score in her room, her phone rang. Seeing Zandraโ€™s name on the caller ID, she was visibly surprised. Why would Zandra be calling her?

After a moment of hesitation, she answered. โ€œHello, what can I do for you?โ€

There was some background noise on Zandraโ€™s end as she spoke. โ€œDo you have some free time? Iโ€™d like to treat you to a meal.โ€

Elyse hesitated. โ€œCanโ€™t we discuss this over the phone?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s better to talk in person,โ€ Zandra insisted.

After some consideration, Elyse finally agreed. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll come over.โ€

Zandra replied, โ€œIโ€™ll send you the address shortly. You can come directly.โ€

After hanging up, Elyseโ€™s expression turned serious. She couldnโ€™t predict what Zandra wanted to discuss and doubted it would be pleasant.

Recalling her past encounters with Theoโ€™s parents, particularly Zandraโ€™s disapproval during their first meeting and their abrupt departure when Theo ran out of his wedding, Elyse felt uneasy. After deliberating for a moment, she decided to seek out Jayden.

Jayden, engrossed in reading a document, didnโ€™t notice her approach. Quickly adjusting himself in his wheelchair, he turned to face her. โ€œWhatโ€™s on your mind?โ€

โ€œZandra called me. Sheโ€™s Theoโ€™s mother. She invited me to lunch,โ€ Elyse informed him.

Raising an eyebrow, Jayden remarked, โ€œSo, youโ€™ll meet your exโ€™s mother?โ€

Elyseโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œI doubt itโ€™ll be a pleasant discussion. I suspect she has ulterior motives.โ€

โ€œWill you still go, then?โ€ Jayden inquired.

โ€œIt would be impolite not to. Besides, I owe Zandra an explanation for calling off the wedding with Theo,โ€ Elyse replied somberly.
