Chapter 45:
โDo you truly wish for me to stand?โ Jayden inquired calmly.
Elyse nodded earnestly. โAbsolutely. You were once able-bodied. Wouldnโt you like to stand again?โ
Then, adopting a serious tone, she added, โTruly, you looked so striking in my dream. I was captivated by you.โ
Jayden lightly stroked his chin, a faint smile playing on his lips. She was indeed naive and easily swayed.
Shortly after, Driscoll returned with warm milk and placed it in front of Elyse.
โThank you, Driscoll,โ Elyse said, settling into her chair and savoring the milkโs warmth.
Observing her enjoyment, Jaydenโs appetite was piqued. He had eaten alone earlier, but seeing her delight in the milk made him hungry. โCould I have a serving as well?โ he requested.
Driscoll, aware of Jaydenโs lack of appetite earlier, was pleased to see his newfound interest. He promptly went to the kitchen and returned with another glass of warm milk.
โDid you eat breakfast today?โ Elyse asked.
โI woke up too early and had no appetite,โ Jayden explained.
Elyse chuckled. โThen youโd better join me for breakfast.โ
Jayden glanced at her, issuing a reminder. โWe have a dinner party tonight. Try not to overdo it with the drinks. You were so tipsy last night that it took two maids to carry you back to your room.โ
Elyse was startled. โThat canโt be. I havenโt been eating much lately. I couldnโt have gained weight.โ
โHow do you think you made it back to your room, then?โ Jayden prodded.
โDidnโt you carry me?โ she ventured tentatively.
โIn your dream,โ he quipped.
Elyse struggled to accept this. Trying to change the subject, she playfully fed Jayden some grapes.
Accepting the offering with a faint smile, Jayden remarked, โLooks like youโve gained a bit of weight, but you wonโt let me say it.โ
โStop it. I donโt believe Iโve gained weight,โ Elyse protested.
As Driscoll approached with breakfast, witnessing their playful exchange, he grinned and offered, โMr. Owen, please enjoy your breakfast.โ
Once the food was served, Elyse turned to Driscoll anxiously. โDid I really gain weight? Jayden said it took two maids to carry me back to my room last night.โ
Driscoll interjected, โHeโs teasing you. Youโre quite slender. In fact, the chef mentioned wanting to help you put on a bit of weight a few days ago.โ
Relieved, Elyse shot Jayden a glare. Jayden simply grinned and teased, โYou really are gullible. Youโll believe anything I say, wonโt you?โ
โJayden!โ she exclaimed, feeling a pang of embarrassment at being duped. How could he undermine her like that? It was a blow to her self-esteem.
After breakfast, as Elyse gave Jayden a massage, she couldnโt resist pinching him a few times, venting her frustration.
Once she left the room, Jayden winced, rubbing the spot where sheโd pinched him. โSheโs getting bolder.โ
As Elyse was engrossed in studying a music score in her room, her phone rang. Seeing Zandraโs name on the caller ID, she was visibly surprised. Why would Zandra be calling her?
After a moment of hesitation, she answered. โHello, what can I do for you?โ
There was some background noise on Zandraโs end as she spoke. โDo you have some free time? Iโd like to treat you to a meal.โ
Elyse hesitated. โCanโt we discuss this over the phone?โ
โItโs better to talk in person,โ Zandra insisted.
After some consideration, Elyse finally agreed. โAlright, Iโll come over.โ
Zandra replied, โIโll send you the address shortly. You can come directly.โ
After hanging up, Elyseโs expression turned serious. She couldnโt predict what Zandra wanted to discuss and doubted it would be pleasant.
Recalling her past encounters with Theoโs parents, particularly Zandraโs disapproval during their first meeting and their abrupt departure when Theo ran out of his wedding, Elyse felt uneasy. After deliberating for a moment, she decided to seek out Jayden.
Jayden, engrossed in reading a document, didnโt notice her approach. Quickly adjusting himself in his wheelchair, he turned to face her. โWhatโs on your mind?โ
โZandra called me. Sheโs Theoโs mother. She invited me to lunch,โ Elyse informed him.
Raising an eyebrow, Jayden remarked, โSo, youโll meet your exโs mother?โ
Elyseโs expression darkened. โI doubt itโll be a pleasant discussion. I suspect she has ulterior motives.โ
โWill you still go, then?โ Jayden inquired.
โIt would be impolite not to. Besides, I owe Zandra an explanation for calling off the wedding with Theo,โ Elyse replied somberly.
