Chapter 460:

“That’s enough,” Jayden declared, deftly maneuvering his wheelchair out of the ward. The door closed with a soft click. Peyton turned to Elyse, a hint of sadness in his smile. “He’s blaming himself, even if it doesn’t show.”

“I should thank you as well. You saved his life,” Elyse said warmly.

Peyton stretched, clasping his hands behind his head. “Don’t just thank me with words. I did save his life!”

Elyse chuckled. “Of course, Mr. Savior.” They continued their conversation until Jayden returned with a doctor. The doctor performed a quick examination and left.

Peyton waved dismissively at the couple. “You can go now. You’re interrupting.”

“Interrupting what?” Elyse asked, her curiosity piqued.

“My nightly solo adventures,” Peyton replied enigmatically.

Elyse instinctively stepped back, maintaining a cautious distance. Peyton eyed Jayden, one eyebrow arched. “But feel free to stay. I don’t mind sharing my evening.”

“Let’s go home,” Jayden said curtly to Elyse, turning to leave.

Elyse quickly followed. Peyton called after them, “Bring some good food!”

Outside the ward, Elyse noticed Jayden’s relief as they approached the elevator. Pearce was waiting.

“Did you get the medicine for your friend?” Elyse asked casually.

Without answering, Pearce embraced her tightly. Elyse stood shocked, rigid, her hands hovering.

“I’ve finally found you!” Pearce exclaimed, his voice trembling.

Angered, Jayden grabbed Pearce’s wrist, twisting it. Pearce countered, freeing himself and gently pushing Elyse aside. Tension escalated between them.

Confused and concerned, Elyse didn’t understand Pearce’s sudden hug or the rapid change in atmosphere. Pearce’s gaze grew icy as he looked Jayden up and down.

The paternity test had confirmed his relationship to Elyse: she was the daughter of his uncle, Rickey Owen Benson, who had disappeared years ago. Suspecting his uncle’s death, Pearce felt responsible for protecting Rickey’s only daughter. This was the first time he truly considered Jayden, whom he’d previously dismissed. After observing him closely, Pearce was more convinced than ever that Jayden wasn’t right for his cousin.

Pearce raised his eyes slowly. “Let me go.”

Jayden smiled coldly. “You hugged my wife. I’m not letting that slide.”

Anger surged through Jayden. The thought of anyone near Elyse was unbearable. He’d underestimated Pearce; perhaps he’d targeted Elyse from the start! His eyes darkened.

Pearce sneered. Clearly, he thought Jayden was unfit and acting like a lunatic.

Unable to bear the tension, Elyse stepped between them. “This is a misunderstanding,” she said desperately. “You should go.” (Her words were directed at Pearce.)

Pearce paused, speechless. He’d intended to take Elyse away, but this wasn’t the time. He realized he needed to explain everything to Elyse, but not with Jayden present. His expression softened.

“Okay, see you next time.” Pearce stepped into the elevator and left.
