Chapter 50:
Outside the police station, Mabel threw herself into Glendaโs arms. โMom! You finally came to get me! I missed you so much,โ she whined. โI was miserable in there. I couldnโt eat or sleep properly.โ
Glenda held her tightly, her eyes welling up. โAll right, all right, thatโs enough,โ Lanny called out. โStop embarrassing me and get in the car, or Iโll leave without you.โ He muttered a curse and quickly rolled up the car window, ashamed that his daughter had received detention.
Noticing her fatherโs short temper, Mabel glanced at her mother and asked in a quiet, wary voice, โDid Dad find out you took his money? Did he beat you?โ
โNo, no, your father loves you,โ Glenda replied, her face serious. โHe did everything to bail you out. Your only mistake was attending that orgy. You were influenced by those rascals.โ
Mabel pursed her lips. โI just wanted to find someone powerful to sponsor me. I couldnโt get any good resources in the entertainment industry. I was worried. Jeff Burke invited me, saying Iโd meet big shots. Thatโs why I went.โ
Glenda clicked her tongue in frustration and disappointment. โYou foolish girl, use your brain.โ
Lanny rolled down the car window. โAre you getting in or not? Do you want to make a bigger spectacle?โ
Glenda grabbed Mabel and ushered her into the car. Mabel felt the tension as she settled into the backseat. She knew Lanny was furious and wisely kept quiet.
When they arrived home, Lanny disappeared into his study. Mabel breathed a sigh of relief, but her next words were laced with discontent. โWhy is he so angry, Mom? I used his money, but only a little. He has plenty more.โ
Glenda shook her head. โHe isnโt mad about the money. Itโs something else.โ
โWhat, then?โ Glenda wasnโt sure, but suspected it involved an incident from twenty-two years ago. Meanwhile, Lanny paced anxiously, talking on the phone. โHowโs it going? Found her yet? Why did she escape your hospital? Explain yourself!โ
The other party replied, prompting Lannyโs enraged outburst. โYou worthless piece of shit! You canโt find one person! If she contacts my daughter, Iโll shut down your hospital.โ He hung up and slammed the phone on his desk. Glenda entered just then and witnessed the outburst.
โWhat are you doing here?โ Lanny asked crossly. Glenda placed the tea service on the table. โI wanted to check on you. Youโve been very upset lately. Iโm worried about your health. What about Mabel and me? Who will we rely on if something happens to you?โ
Lanny calmed at the sound of her voice and took the teacup. โIs this about that old woman in the mental hospital?โ Glendaโs question earned a cold glance. โDonโt ask what doesnโt concern you.โ
She complied; sheโd gotten her answer. Her suspicions were correct. Lanny didnโt want her to know the details, but the incident haunted him. โElyse is married now,โ Glenda remarked. โDo you think we did right by her?โ
Lanny sneered. โWhat are you saying? Itโs been twenty-two years. Are you finally feeling guilty? Or scared of justice?โ
โThatโs not what I meant,โ Glenda said, realizing her mistake. She changed the subject. โElyse has settled down. Shouldnโt we arrange Mabelโs marriage? She wants to marry Theo Ward.โ
Lanny scoffed. โThe Wards despise us. If you care about Mabel, advise her to give up.โ
Glenda bristled. โThen why did you let Elyse marry him?โ
โDo you think I did it for her? It was for the Wardsโ power and influence. Besides, Elyse isnโt my daughter. Why would I care?โ
