Chapter 502:
Elyse slowly opened her eyes at the sound of a voice. "Irving, why are you here?" she asked softly.
Upon seeing Elyse awake, Irving rushed to her side. Touching her belly with concern, he stammered, "Are—are you pregnant? Is it true? How far along are you? Could you actually have the baby next month?"
Elyse smiled at his barrage of questions. Gently patting his hand, she replied, "Irving, pregnancy lasts about forty weeks. How could I possibly give birth next month?"
Embarrassed, Irving scratched his head. "Oops, I'm just too excited." He turned, pointing to Clive who stood behind him. "Is this your husband? Did he get you pregnant?"
Clive looked helpless. "I'm really not her husband. You've got it all wrong."
Irving frowned. "He isn't?"
Elyse shook her head. "No, he's a friend of my husband."
Irving slumped into a chair, shooting Elyse a piercing look. "Where's your husband? Tell him to come here. I need to speak with him."
"He's in the next room," Elyse replied, her eyes wide with sincerity.
Leaping to his feet, Irving strode toward the adjacent ward, Clive hurrying after him, worried Irving might harm the defenseless Jayden.
In the next ward, Irving saw Elyse's husband. Realizing Jayden was in a coma, his anger subsided. Approaching the bedside, he asked, "What happened to him?"
Anticipating Irving's impulsiveness, Clive quickly interjected, "He was injured."
Irving frowned. "How?"
"It's complicated, but he took a risk to save Elyse," Clive added after a pause. "He's not all bad."
Irving nodded slowly, considering this information. "When is he expected to wake up?"
"Any moment now," Clive replied, glancing at the wall clock. Five hours had passed since the surgery; Jayden could regain consciousness soon.
Irving stared at Jayden for an uncomfortably long time. Then, while Clive was momentarily distracted, he struck Jayden across the face.
A chill of fear ran down Clive's spine. "What are you doing? You hit him!"
Irving's eyes burned with indignation. "Elyse is climbing the ladder of her career, but now she's pregnant. Doesn't he deserve that slap?"
Clive started to argue, but paused as Jayden's eyelids fluttered. "He's waking up! I'll get the doctor!" he exclaimed, rushing from the room.
Left alone with Jayden, Irving smirked and whistled. "A slap woke you up? Maybe what you need is a good beating."
Jayden, his mind still foggy, asked uncertainly, "Who are you?"
"I'm your worst nightmare," Irving snapped rudely.
Jayden's expression turned lethal. "Say that again."
Irving was about to escalate the situation when Clive burst back in with a team of doctors and nurses, halting the confrontation.
The examination confirmed Jayden was unharmed. After the medical team left, Jayden's thoughts turned to Elyse. With urgency, he asked, "Where's Elyse? Is she all right?"
Clive and Irving exchanged complex looks.
Jayden, sensing trouble, asked, "Where is Elyse? I saved her, didn't I? Why hasn't she come to see me?"
Irving bristled. The idea of a pregnant Elyse visiting was preposterous to him. "Elyse is in the next ward. If you want to see her, you'll have to go there yourself."
Ignoring the doctor's earlier cautions, Jayden wheeled himself to Elyse's ward. He quietly opened the door to find her sleeping peacefully.
He approached her bedside and took her hand, but his voice failed him.
Elyse's eyes fluttered open. Noticing him still in his wheelchair, she asked casually, "You can walk, can't you? Why are you still in the wheelchair?"
