Chapter 504:
Jayden hugged Elyse tightly. "If the child is yours, I'll give it the best of everything."
Elyse felt a strange discomfort. Her heart remained unmoved. Once, such words would have filled her with joy, sparking dreams of motherhood. She gently pushed him away, creating space between them. She chose not to share her current thoughts. Curling under the blanket, she murmured, "I'm tired. I need to sleep."
Jayden tucked the blanket around her. "Why are you in the hospital?" he asked.
"My baby isn't doing well," Elyse explained softly. "The doctor advised I stay to stabilize the pregnancy."
Jayden nodded and smoothed her disheveled bangs. He sat with her until she drifted off to sleep. Planning to leave, he stood, abandoning his wheelchair, and wheeled it out.
Clive was waiting at the door. Surprised, he blurted out, "Aren't you supposed to keep pretending to be disabled?"
Jayden scratched his head in frustration. "Why bother? She knows the truth now." He glanced around. "Where's Irving?"
"He left," Clive replied. "Said he was worn out and needed time to process things." He looked worriedly at Jayden's injured abdomen. "That wound reopened when you saved Elyse, didn't it? Please listen to your doctor and stay in bed."
Jayden settled back into his wheelchair. "Where's the driver? Push me to him," he demanded.
Raising an eyebrow, Clive said, "He's at the usual spot. Shaun caught him trying to flee; the fool tried to kill himself after missing Elyse. Thankfully, Shaun stopped him."
"That might be the key to unraveling my suspicions," Jayden said, massaging his temples. A suspect was forming, but he hesitated to act without concrete proof.
Before leaving with Jayden, Clive instructed the guards to keep a close eye on Elyse. Seeing the driver, who had been harshly interrogated, Jayden felt it wasn't enough. The driver had targeted Elyse, not him, and Jayden felt he deserved damnation.
The next morning, Elyse awoke feeling hungry. Driscoll entered her room carrying breakfast.
Noticing she was awake, he asked, "How did you sleep? Everything okay?"
Elyse nodded, her eyes fixed on the lunchbox. "I'm famished," she confessed. "I could eat everything in sight."
Driscoll laughed and set down the lunchbox. "Hearing about your pregnancy, the chef woke early to prepare this especially for you."
Elyse beamed. "I'm really looking forward to it. His cooking never disappoints."
Driscoll, smiling warmly, placed the dishes on the table before fetching water. Passing Jayden's ward, he noticed it was empty. Shaking his head, he muttered, "Mr. Owen really doesn't look after himself."
Jayden was in a car with Clive, heading to his grandfather's place. Clive, battling fatigue, yawned. "You're going there like this? Aren't you worried about what your grandpa might do?"
Jayden, leaning back with his eyes closed, responded calmly, "He's been trying to kill me for years. He won't stop whether I visit him or not. So why not just show up?"
Clive, remembering something else, added, "Elyse has severe morning sickness. She's probably finished breakfast. Shouldn't you call her?"
"Severe morning sickness?" Jayden looked it up online. Understanding, he exclaimed, "That darn baby! Always causing trouble! How dare it make Elyse go through so much!"
Clive, arms folded, asked, "So, you're suggesting she terminate the pregnancy because the baby is 'evil'? Elyse adores it. I doubt she'd agree."
After a moment, Jayden conceded, "If she wants to keep it, then we'll keep it."
