Chapter 58:

The old woman spread her arms wide and wailed like a lost child. Jayden turned to Elyse, who looked stricken. โ€œIt seems she only remembers you,โ€ he said. โ€œShe called your name before she fainted the other day, remember?โ€

Elyse did remember, but what then? Hesitating, she slowly approached the old woman. When the patient continued crying, Elyse crouched and put her arms around her.

The old woman leaned into the embrace as if finding solace. She wept, her tears soaking Elyseโ€™s shirt collar.

They remained embraced for a while. When the old woman finally calmed, Elyse asked, โ€œIs there something you wanted to tell me, ma'am?โ€

The old woman slowly raised her head, her face etched with misery. โ€œAre you Elyse Lloyd?โ€

โ€œYes, thatโ€™s my name.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re all grown up now. When I first saw you, you were just a baby.โ€

Elyse was shocked. This woman had met her as a baby?

The old woman folded her arms as if cradling an infant, then looked at Elyse, her brow furrowed in confusion, as if wondering how the baby had become a young woman. โ€œHow old are you?โ€

โ€œTwenty-two.โ€

โ€œTwenty-two. So it has been twenty-two years.โ€ The old woman muttered to herself, then her face lit up. She grabbed Elyseโ€™s arms and cried, โ€œDonโ€™t forget Rickey Owen and find Janet Lawrence!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t forget Rickey Owen and find Janet Lawrence!โ€ she repeated, her tone increasingly frantic and paranoid.

Elyse stiffened, frightened, and could only stare.

โ€œWhat are you waiting for?โ€ Jayden said to the doctors. โ€œDo something; restrain her.โ€

A nurse quickly administered a sedative. The old woman slumped unconscious.

Elyse pulled away, glancing at her arms; red marks showed where the old woman had gripped her.

โ€œAre you all right?โ€ Jayden asked, walking beside her.

โ€œIโ€™m fine. The nurses will take over. Letโ€™s go home.โ€

Elyse nodded, dazed. She followed him out of the ward. They strolled slowly, but Elyseโ€™s mind was elsewhere. Jayden knew she was still thinking about the ward.

โ€œConcerned about what the old woman said?โ€ he asked.

โ€œVery much so. She knew my name, claimed to know me as a baby. She must know about my past, butโ€ฆ how did she become like this?โ€ Elyse sighed. โ€œAnd those namesโ€”Rickey Owen and Janet Lawrenceโ€”Iโ€™ve never heard them.โ€

Jayden murmured, โ€œIf you want to know who they are, Iโ€™ll have my people investigate.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome, honey,โ€ Jayden said casually.

Elyse stopped, her cheeks flushing pink. โ€œWhy are you calling me that?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? You did it first at your parentsโ€™ house.โ€

โ€œI know, but that wasโ€ฆโ€ Elyseโ€™s lips tightened, her face burning.

โ€œI think itโ€™s good for us to use pet names in public,โ€ Jayden said unconcernedly. โ€œNo one will doubt our relationship.โ€

Elyse sighed, thinking of her fatherโ€™s orders. โ€œDo I really have to meet Theo?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t want to?โ€

โ€œWhy would I? Iโ€™m married.โ€

Jayden cocked his head, seeing her struggle to remain composed. โ€œItโ€™s fine. Go if you need to. I wonโ€™t stop you.โ€

Elyseโ€™s jaw dropped. Driscoll had warned her Jayden could be petty. Sheโ€™d experienced it before and vowed never again.

โ€œWonโ€™t you come with me?โ€

โ€œAnd why would I?โ€ Jayden countered lightly.

โ€œBecause youโ€™re my husband,โ€ Elyse tried a different tactic. โ€œTheo was scary. He tried to kiss me. Iโ€™ll feel safer if youโ€™re with me.โ€

Jayden raised an eyebrow. โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll accompany you.โ€

Elyse chuckled. Jayden looked pleased, but she knew sheโ€™d had to flatter him; otherwise, there would be hell to pay.
