Chapter 58:
The old woman spread her arms wide and wailed like a lost child. Jayden turned to Elyse, who looked stricken. โIt seems she only remembers you,โ he said. โShe called your name before she fainted the other day, remember?โ
Elyse did remember, but what then? Hesitating, she slowly approached the old woman. When the patient continued crying, Elyse crouched and put her arms around her.
The old woman leaned into the embrace as if finding solace. She wept, her tears soaking Elyseโs shirt collar.
They remained embraced for a while. When the old woman finally calmed, Elyse asked, โIs there something you wanted to tell me, ma'am?โ
The old woman slowly raised her head, her face etched with misery. โAre you Elyse Lloyd?โ
โYes, thatโs my name.โ
โYouโre all grown up now. When I first saw you, you were just a baby.โ
Elyse was shocked. This woman had met her as a baby?
The old woman folded her arms as if cradling an infant, then looked at Elyse, her brow furrowed in confusion, as if wondering how the baby had become a young woman. โHow old are you?โ
โTwenty-two.โ
โTwenty-two. So it has been twenty-two years.โ The old woman muttered to herself, then her face lit up. She grabbed Elyseโs arms and cried, โDonโt forget Rickey Owen and find Janet Lawrence!โ
โWhat?โ
โDonโt forget Rickey Owen and find Janet Lawrence!โ she repeated, her tone increasingly frantic and paranoid.
Elyse stiffened, frightened, and could only stare.
โWhat are you waiting for?โ Jayden said to the doctors. โDo something; restrain her.โ
A nurse quickly administered a sedative. The old woman slumped unconscious.
Elyse pulled away, glancing at her arms; red marks showed where the old woman had gripped her.
โAre you all right?โ Jayden asked, walking beside her.
โIโm fine. The nurses will take over. Letโs go home.โ
Elyse nodded, dazed. She followed him out of the ward. They strolled slowly, but Elyseโs mind was elsewhere. Jayden knew she was still thinking about the ward.
โConcerned about what the old woman said?โ he asked.
โVery much so. She knew my name, claimed to know me as a baby. She must know about my past, butโฆ how did she become like this?โ Elyse sighed. โAnd those namesโRickey Owen and Janet LawrenceโIโve never heard them.โ
Jayden murmured, โIf you want to know who they are, Iโll have my people investigate.โ
โThank you.โ
โYouโre welcome, honey,โ Jayden said casually.
Elyse stopped, her cheeks flushing pink. โWhy are you calling me that?โ
โWhatโs wrong? You did it first at your parentsโ house.โ
โI know, but that wasโฆโ Elyseโs lips tightened, her face burning.
โI think itโs good for us to use pet names in public,โ Jayden said unconcernedly. โNo one will doubt our relationship.โ
Elyse sighed, thinking of her fatherโs orders. โDo I really have to meet Theo?โ
โYou donโt want to?โ
โWhy would I? Iโm married.โ
Jayden cocked his head, seeing her struggle to remain composed. โItโs fine. Go if you need to. I wonโt stop you.โ
Elyseโs jaw dropped. Driscoll had warned her Jayden could be petty. Sheโd experienced it before and vowed never again.
โWonโt you come with me?โ
โAnd why would I?โ Jayden countered lightly.
โBecause youโre my husband,โ Elyse tried a different tactic. โTheo was scary. He tried to kiss me. Iโll feel safer if youโre with me.โ
Jayden raised an eyebrow. โIs that so?โ
โYes.โ
โOkay, Iโll accompany you.โ
Elyse chuckled. Jayden looked pleased, but she knew sheโd had to flatter him; otherwise, there would be hell to pay.
