Chapter 647:
โItโs okay,โ Morgan said, a touch of surprise lingering in her voice. โIโm more shocked you actually showed up.โ
โMorgan,โ Pearce emphasized, a hint of steel in his gaze. โNot Janet anymore.โ
Pearce scratched his head sheepishly. โOld habits die hard. To me, youโll always be Janet. Morgan feelsโฆ alien.โ
A wry smile tugged at Morganโs lips. โPeople change, Pearce. You should too.โ
Pearce nodded reluctantly. โAlright, Morgan it is.โ
Suddenly, Codyโs voice broke the flow of their conversation. Lost in a world of self-recrimination, he lamented, โWhere else could Fiona go after leaving Blue Sea? I must have been a terrible instructor.โ
Morgan whipped her head towards Cody; a sharp pinch to his thigh silenced his internal monologue. The pain jolted Cody awake. He blinked blearily, confusion and a hint of annoyance clouding his features. โWhat was that for? I wasnโt bothering anyone.โ
โLook whoโs here,โ Morgan said, gesturing towards Pearce with a pointed finger.
Following her lead, Codyโs eyes landed on Pearce. Disbelief flickered across his face for a moment before he rubbed his brow. โFor a second there, I thought I saw my friend Rickey.โ
A wry smile tugged at Pearceโs lips. โIs the resemblance that strong?โ
Cody studied him for a moment, a newfound seriousness in his eyes. โAt first glance, yeah. But itโs more than looks. Thereโs a spirit there, a resemblance in demeanor.โ
Morgan nodded in agreement. โYou have your fatherโs features, with a hint of Rickey thrown in.โ
Pearce gave a thoughtful nod. Morgan scanned the room, taking in the familiar faces. โSpeaking of reunions,โ she suggested, โwhy donโt we call Elyse over and make it a proper gathering?โ
Codyโs eyes lit up. โThatโs a great idea! I have tons of stories and memories to share with her. Perfect timing!โ
Pearceโs smile faltered slightly. โActually, you might not be able to see Elyse.โ
Confusion settled on Codyโs face. โWhy not? Sheโs probably home. We can just head over.โ
Pearce shook his head. โItโs more complicated than that. Jayden put her under house arrest. Havenโt you noticed she hasnโt been in touch lately?โ
This revelation hit Morgan and Cody like a slap. The realization washed over them, leaving them speechless. A frown creased Morganโs brow. โHouse arrest? Why would Jayden do that? Do you know anything, Pearce? Spill the beans!โ
Pearce sighed heavily. โA few days ago, Elyse met with me. She wanted a divorce from Jayden. We were just starting to talk when he showed up, dragged her away, and locked her up.โ
โDivorce?โ The word exploded from Codyโs mouth, his drunkenness forgotten. โWhy does she want a divorce? Is Jayden mistreating her?โ
Pearce shrugged, a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. โI canโt say for sure. She hinted at things, but they didnโt completely register. But as her cousin, I have to respect her wishes, wouldnโt you agree?โ
Cody needed a moment to collect his thoughts. He poured himself another drink. His mind raced, connecting the dots. Fionaโs seduction and Elyseโs sudden decision for a divorceโthe pieces seemed to fit.
Morgan, ever the pragmatist, saw things more clearly. She had long observed Elyseโs unhappiness and Jaydenโs immaturity. Even genuine love between two young souls could crumble without external forces. But was divorce the only answer?
She mirrored Codyโs action, taking a sip of her drink to compose herself. However, Pearce wasnโt there to discuss salvaging the marriage. His purpose was clear. He wanted to take Elyse away from Jayden.
โI need your help,โ he announced, his voice resolute. โI want to get Elyse out of Jaydenโs house and take her back to Cambape.โ
Morganโs surprise was evident. โYou want them to separate?โ
Pearceโs tone was matter-of-fact. โDo you honestly believe Jayden deserves a place at Elyseโs side?โ
Cody hesitated. โDivorce is a serious decision. We all know you care about Elyse, but marriage isnโt a game. She canโt just walk away on a whim.โ
Pearce waved his hand dismissively. โHe imprisoned her. Thatโs the end of their marriage.โ
