Chapter 703:
Pearce realized arguing with his grandmother was pointless. He admitted, โElyse came back only to visit you on behalf of her father, but youโve never really embraced her. Why would she want to stay with us?โ
He paused, then cautiously continued, โMoreover, during her stay in town, you treated her terribly, always scolding and punishing her. You even locked her in a dark room without food or water.โ
Felicia glared at Pearce.
Pearce winced slightly but stood his ground, adding firmly, โWeโre meant to be family, yet you treat her as if she doesnโt belong. Why would she ever want to stay with us?โ
Visibly irate, Felicia responded sharply, โI wonโt debate this with you. Call Elyse out here now; I want to hear it from her.โ
โItโs too late,โ Pearce replied calmly. โElyse has already left.โ
โHow disrespectful!โ Felicia shouted, striking the floor with her cane.
โWhen she was here, you refused to speak to her. Now that sheโs gone, you suddenly want to talk?โ Pearce pointed out.
Just then, Glenn approached and respectfully announced, โMs. Bentley has just arrived.โ
โMs. Bentley? Are you referring to Victoria Bentley?โ Pearce asked, his tone uncertain.
Glenn confirmed with a nod. โYes, sheโs here, and sheโs brought Forrest with her.โ
Pearce murmured to himself, โWhy did she bring her son? Is she trying to cause trouble?โ
Calmly, Felicia suggested, โWhy not go and see for yourself instead of guessing?โ
Feeling slightly rebuked, Pearce rubbed his head, sighed deeply, and declared, โAlright, Iโll go and see her.โ
As they entered the reception room, their gaze landed on Victoria. She was standing, captivated by the expansive view from the large windows. Noticing their presence, her focus shifted, and her face lit up with a smile. โItโs been a while,โ she said warmly.
Pearce returned the smile. โIndeed, it has. I think itโs been several years since we last saw each other?โ
Victoria replied, maintaining a cool distance, โI think that sounds about right.โ
They exchanged brief pleasantries before sitting down across from each other.
Pearce took the lead in the conversation. โMs. Bentley, may I ask what brings you here today?โ
Victoria arched an eyebrow and crossed her arms. โYouโre not aware? Elyse didnโt mention my visit?โ
Pearceโs thoughts were in turmoil. How was Elyse connected to all this? Yet, she hadnโt mentioned it to him.
Victoriaโs comment seemed to provoke Felicia, who looked visibly upset. โHas Elyse caused some trouble?โ she asked, turning to Pearce. โIโve always said she needs more discipline. She must learn proper behavior!โ
Pearceโs face grew stern, and he spoke firmly. โGrandma, Ms. Bentley hasnโt given us any details yet, so please refrain from jumping to conclusions!โ
At Pearceโs response, Felicia became visibly angry. โAre you suggesting I am treating her unfairly? How much does that unrefined girl really understand about manners?โ
โGrandma!โ Pearceโs patience had reached its limits. His tone grew louder. โPlease take some time to truly understand her before you judge her. Iโm not sure where these ideas are coming from, but I will not stand by while you disparage her like this!โ
Felicia gasped, her hand flying to her chest as she struggled for air. . . .
