Chapter 77:
After disembarking, Elyse and Jayden went straight to their hotel. They'd arrived in Liverton a day early to meet Tracy before the wedding. Elyse messaged Tracy, then took Jayden to their planned meeting place, an entertainment club.
"What's your friend marrying?" Jayden asked, gazing out at the Liverton streets.
"Shaun Kennedy," Elyse replied. "He was a heartthrob in schoolโunreachable. I never thought she'd win him over."
"Shaun Kennedy?" Jayden's interest piqued. "Isn't he the Kennedy heir? What about her family? How did she land such a prominent husband?"
"Her parents are schoolteachers," Elyse said, surprised. "She doesn't come from a notable family. Is he really that hard to get?"
"The Kennedys in Liverton are like the Owens in Watscar," Jayden said with a smile.
Elyse was stunned. Reaching the club, they found Tracy's designated room filled with a palpable tension. Over a dozen people were gathered, Tracy isolated among them. Their arrival interrupted the group's conversation. The leader, sneering, said, "Why is there a disabled person? How did he get into the VIP room?"
Her companions laughed. Spotting Elyse, Tracy rushed over, grabbing her hand. "Elyse, you're here!" she exclaimed.
Elyse patted Tracy's shoulder, stepping in front of her. "What do you mean by that?" she asked sternly.
Lily Fernandez, the leader, sneered, "Ah, I see. You're Tracy's friend, the one with the disabled husband. How funny."
Tracy felt guilty. "I'm sorry, Elyse. Maybe I shouldn't have invited you."
Elyse saw the change in Tracy's demeanor. "This isn't your fault," she said firmly. "Don't feel guilty about this dog barking. Stop being so kind."
Jayden, unusual witnessing Elyse's toughness, let her handle it, ready to intervene if needed.
Lily bristled. "How dare you call me a dog? I'm Lily Fernandez! You can't scold me!"
Elyse, tilting her head, replied coolly, "It doesn't matter who you are. Insult me, and I'll retaliate. Isn't that fair?"
"You're right," Tracy said confidently. "That's the spirit!"
Lily smirked. "So a backer makes you bold?" she taunted.
Tracy, emboldened, stood her ground. "Do you think I'm unworthy of marrying Shaun? Did you bring these people to embarrass me? You're best friends with Dolores. So what? Tomorrow, I'm marrying Shaun, not her."
Elyse frowned, puzzled. Did Shaun have a past lover? Who was Dolores?
Tracy had meant to introduce Elyse to her Liverton friends. She now realized they were Dolores Ruiz's allies, trying to belittle her and sabotage the wedding. Tracy wasn't backing down. Dismissing them with a cool look, she took Elyse's hand. "Let's go. Dinner, just us. I'm done with them."
Elyse agreed, pushing Jayden's wheelchair.
"Wait!" A man shouted, his expression arrogant. "Did I give you permission to leave? Call off the wedding. Shaun belongs to my sister. Who are you to marry him?"
