Chapter 8:

โ€œHave you two ever truly loved me?โ€ Elyseโ€™s question caught Lanny off guard, his expression shifting abruptly. Unaware of her fatherโ€™s reaction, Elyse looked at Glenda, awaiting her response.

โ€œElyse, whatโ€™s gotten into you? How could you doubt our love? We care about you, which is why weโ€™re suggesting you reconcile with Theo. With his familyโ€™s wealth, youโ€™d be set for life,โ€ Glenda replied calmly.

โ€œBut Iโ€™m married now. Do you think Theo would accept a divorced woman?โ€ Elyse challenged, her eyes fixed on her mother.

Glendaโ€™s composure faltered, replaced by anxiety. โ€œWho were you married to? Is he wealthy?โ€ she asked urgently.

Elyse hesitated. She initially wanted to reveal her marriage to Jayden Owen, a man of considerable wealth and influence. However, seeing Glendaโ€™s anxiety, she changed her answer. โ€œNo, heโ€™s a pauper.โ€

Lanny erupted. โ€œYouโ€™ve disobeyed us! End this marriage immediately!โ€

โ€œNo, I wonโ€™t,โ€ Elyse declared firmly. โ€œSince you abandoned me at the wedding, Iโ€™ve taken control of my life. You no longer have any say in my decisions.โ€

โ€œI raised you, and this is how you repay me?โ€ Lannyโ€™s face flushed with anger. He summoned Driscoll and the maids, commanding, โ€œLock her in the basement until she comes to her senses!โ€

Elyse felt deep disappointment. They resorted to confinement to assert their authority, demanding her submission. She had appeased them countless times, but this time she refused to yield.

As Elyse was escorted away, Mabel eagerly said, โ€œSince she canโ€™t marry Theo, why not let me marry him? We wonโ€™t lose anything then.โ€

Elyse laughed. Mabelโ€™s constant attempts to replace her were predictable.

In the living room, Jayden sat, watching the wall clock. It was already 11:00 p.m., yet Driscoll beside him remained silent. The dinner dishes had been reheated multiple times.

โ€œDid she say sheโ€™d be back for dinner?โ€ Jayden asked.

โ€œShe did,โ€ Driscoll confirmed.

โ€œThen why hasnโ€™t she returned?โ€

Driscoll remained silent, unaware of the true reason. Did Elyse run away like Joanna? He dared not speculate.

Jayden texted his assistant. Within ten minutes, a reply came: โ€œSheโ€™s useless; sheโ€™s locked in a basement.โ€

Driscoll was startled. โ€œSheโ€™s confined in the basement. Should we call the authorities?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™ll handle this myself,โ€ Jayden declared, his eyes blazing with fury. As Elyseโ€™s husband, he wouldnโ€™t tolerate anyone imprisoning her without his consent.

Observing Jaydenโ€™s anger, Driscoll wisely remained silent. Elyseโ€™s family had clearly pushed Jayden to his limit.

In the dim basement, Elyse huddled in a corner, her eyes closed in exhaustion. Hunger gnawed at her, but she focused on escape.

After what seemed like an eternity, the basement door creaked open, casting a beam of light into the darkness. Several figures entered, their faces illuminated by flashlights.

The sudden brightness made Elyse flinch. โ€œWho dared to enter the basement?โ€ she asked.

โ€œMr. Owen, weโ€™ve located Ms. Lloyd,โ€ one of the figures said. Jayden had come to rescue her.

Dazed, Elyse emerged from the basement, finding the villa brightly lit. Her parents cowered beside Jayden; their demeanor had completely changed.

โ€œJayden,โ€ she whispered, her voice tinged with sorrow.

Jaydenโ€™s gaze fell upon her, noting a handprint on her pale face. โ€œWhat happened to her?โ€ he demanded.

โ€œI slapped her,โ€ Lanny confessed, guilt evident.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Jaydenโ€™s question cut through the tension.

โ€œBecause she refused to marry Theo,โ€ Lanny stammered, sweat beading on his forehead.

Jaydenโ€™s demeanor turned icy. โ€œSo youโ€™re displeased with me?โ€

โ€œN-no, not at all,โ€ Lanny stammered, his smile strained.

He then turned to Elyse, reproach in his tone. โ€œYou married Mr. Owen, but why lie and say heโ€™s poor?โ€
