Chapter 970:

There was a brief pause before Jayden spoke in a concerned tone, โ€œAre you doing okay at Edwardโ€™s?โ€

Elyse took a moment to compose herself, then said more steadily, โ€œYes, Iโ€™m alright. Donโ€™t worry about me.โ€

โ€œAre you crying, little liar?โ€ Jayden asked, his voice tinged with resignation.

A tear rolled down Elyseโ€™s cheek, landing on her bedding before she quickly wiped it away. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not crying. I told you not to worry, and yet here you are, concerned over nothing.โ€

She glanced around her room and added, โ€œIโ€™m at the Moon Palace. Edward is the governorโ€™s son. With him here, I almost feel untouchable.โ€

Jayden replied, โ€œI know. Thatโ€™s why I left you in Edwardโ€™s care.โ€

Though Jayden disliked Edward, he acknowledged the manโ€™s influence. With Edward nearby, Elyse would be safe.

He paused, then added, โ€œIโ€™ll come to pick you up once I finish my business here.โ€

Elyse scoffed. โ€œYou never share what youโ€™re doing. Youโ€™re such a liar!โ€

Jayden fell silent. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, but I have my reasons for keeping things from you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bother coming back for me, then. I donโ€™t see what good comes from all this secrecy.โ€

Elyse inhaled deeply, frustration bubbling inside her. โ€œIf you insist on pushing me away, I donโ€™t care anymore. Nobody waits forever for someone.โ€

Jayden didnโ€™t reply, but Elyse could hear the wind and a lighter flicking. She guessed he was smoking a cigarette. Closing her eyes, she visualized the scene.

After a lengthy silence, Jayden said in a subdued tone, โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter. If you want to be with another man, go ahead. But if I come back and find him, Iโ€™ll kill him.โ€

Elyse was shocked. โ€œHave you lost your mind?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not joking,โ€ Jayden stated, inhaling and exhaling slowly. โ€œIn this life, you are only meant to be with me. Donโ€™t even consider other men.โ€

Elyseโ€™s anger rose. โ€œSo, Iโ€™m supposed to be with you, kept in the dark and played for a fool, huh?โ€ Her voice trembled. โ€œYouโ€™ve always been this way! Why canโ€™t you change? You promised to share your secrets with me, but now itโ€™s always โ€˜next time.โ€™ When will you stop making excuses?โ€

Elyse felt overwhelmed. She bit her hand to stifle a cry. What was the use of crying? Jayden had messed up initially, and they were already divorced. Did it really matter whether she knew his secrets or not? She kept trying to convince herself.

On the other end, Jayden heard Elyseโ€™s muffled cries, his expression reflecting loneliness and regret. . . .
