Chapter 187
โIsnโt that Calliope?โ Lisette exclaimed as she entered the pub with the Jewell brothers. They had barely stepped inside when they noticed the commotion unfolding nearby.
โWhatโs she gotten herself into this time? Sheโll be in trouble!โ Ulysses grumbled, pulling his cap lower and adjusting his mask as he glanced over at Calliope. โShe canโt go anywhere without stirring up trouble. Sheโs never been one to play by the rules.โ
Valerian frowned, casting a skeptical look in Calliopeโs direction. He didnโt know the details, but his gut reaction was that Calliope was at the heart of whatever was going down.
Horatio hesitated, โIs she in trouble? Shouldnโt weโฆโ
Before he could finish, Lisette interjected, โWe should help. She acted out even if she had cut ties with us. We canโt just watch her get into deep waters.โ
โCome on, guys. We canโt just leave her hanging.โ
It was almost like she was reminding them that Calliope had indeed distanced herself from the Jewell family.
Valerian scoffed, โWhy should we care? She was the one who wanted nothing to do with us, remember?โ
โIโd like to see how she manages without our help,โ he added with a hint of resentment. โWhen she sees us, sheโll be begging for our help.โ
Ulysses nodded in agreement. โEven if she does, we wonโt bail her out. She brought this on herself.โ
Lisette looked conflicted. โAre you sure thatโs the right thing to do?โ
โYouโre too kind, Lisette,โ Ulysses said with a shake of his head. โThis is her own doing.โ
The brothers found a table not far from the action, where they could keep an eye on things without getting directly involved. The commotion had caused the crowd to back off a little, but everyone was still watching.
Calliope had figured out what was happening. The guy was bullying his wife, refusing to let her work or have any fun. He was taking out his own failures on her, keeping her locked away, and even resorting to violence.
โMove it, you witch!โ the man barked at Calliope. โThatโs my wife. Iโm taking her home!โ
โDisobedient women need to learn her lesson!โ he snarled at Calliope, โGet the hell out of my way, you bitch! And you, come over here! Do you think you can hide away from me forever? Youโre my wife. Where do you think you can hide?โ
His eyes flashed with a vile grin as he glanced at his wife, who was cowering behind Calliope.
The woman looked around, hoping someone would step in.
But no one moved. Everyone was just a spectator except for Calliope.
Not far away, Portia had heard the ruckus and was about to rush over, but Calliope signaled for her to stay put. So, Portia remained among the onlookers, her eyes fixed on Calliope.
Calliope hadnโt budged from her seat. She met the manโs gaze with a steady look, then glanced at the trembling woman beside her.
โI can call the police,โ she offered.
โNo, please donโt!โ The womanโs face went pale at the suggestion, and she shook her head frantically. โThey wonโt help. Heโll just come back even angrier!โ
Calliope frowned. โThen how can I help you?โ
The woman was at a loss, frozen in place and unable to ask for any specific help.
โYou wonโt move, huh?โ the man sneered and lunged toward Calliope with a menacing intent.
