Chapter 210

โ€œThat Calliope, huh? Sheโ€™s got quite the reputation. Rumor has it she didnโ€™t even finish school before getting expelled. No degree, no decent job, and when she tried working for the Jewell Group, they kicked her out.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s drop it, okay? Mr. Myers must have his reasons. Letโ€™s not say too much.โ€

โ€œYeah, Mr. Myers seems to fancy her. Maybe sheโ€™s just got a way with men!โ€

Even though no one thought much of Calliope, they didnโ€™t dare say more considering how protective Silas was of her.

Calliope, well aware of the murmurs, didnโ€™t really care. She calmly sat in the office, munching on an apple while occasionally glancing at Kelda, who just wrapped things up.

Kelda, unable to let it go, stared at Calliope. โ€œI donโ€™t see whatโ€™s so special about you, besides being a bit pretty. But Silas doesnโ€™t strike me as the shallow type. Surely, he sees more than just looks.โ€

Not minding Keldaโ€™s gaze, Calliope raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhatever the case, you still owe me three favors.โ€

โ€œUgh!โ€ Kelda huffed. โ€œFine, what do you want?โ€

โ€œHavenโ€™t decided yet. But once I think of some, youโ€™ll be the first to know,โ€ Calliope said with a smile.

โ€œIโ€™m warning you, donโ€™t push it.โ€ Kelda shot Calliope a stare before turning to leave.

A short while later, the door swung open. Calliope assumed it was Silas, but as she glanced up, she saw Gideon.

โ€œUncleโ€ฆโ€

Gideon barely started when his gaze settled on Calliope; he was momentarily stunned, frowning, surprised Calliope was in Silasโ€™s office.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ Gideon asked, displeasure evident in his tone.

โ€œIs it so strange for me to be in my husbandโ€™s office? He even said he might hand over the company to me,โ€ Calliope replied, taking another bite of her apple and eyeing Gideon.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Gideon looked at her, disbelief written all over his face. โ€œHand the company over to you? Are you dreaming? Do you think my uncle is a fool?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s no fool, but he did say that,โ€ Calliope shrugged. โ€œHeโ€™s a good man. Much better than you, at least.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Gideon inhaled sharply. โ€œMy uncle is just stringing you along. The Baker Group doesnโ€™t even bear his name. What makes you think he can gift it to you?โ€

He stepped closer, towering over Calliope. โ€œCalliope, my uncle will tire of you soon enough. Donโ€™t be so smug.โ€

โ€œAm I being smug?โ€ Calliope said innocently, โ€œI donโ€™t feel it at all.โ€

โ€œYou came here just to flaunt your status, didnโ€™t you?โ€ Gideon chuckled. โ€œYou think being Mrs. Myers will earn you respect? No one will like you. You have no background, no education, no skills. My uncleโ€™s interest in you is just a passing fancy. And others wouldnโ€™t even lay an eye on you. Everyoneโ€™s waiting for the day you become the laughingstock. Theyโ€™re all waiting to see you ditched. And the Baker Group has nothing to do with you!โ€

Gideon leaned in, his face inches from Calliopeโ€™s. His eyes locked onto hers, and he felt his heart race with an unfamiliar impulse.

There was a voice in his mind โ€“ kiss her.

Her lips looked so inviting, soft and temptingโ€ฆ His uncle must have tasted them, right?

Yet, despite having dated her for so long back in the day, he realized he never had the chance.
