Chapter 210
โThat Calliope, huh? Sheโs got quite the reputation. Rumor has it she didnโt even finish school before getting expelled. No degree, no decent job, and when she tried working for the Jewell Group, they kicked her out.โ
โLetโs drop it, okay? Mr. Myers must have his reasons. Letโs not say too much.โ
โYeah, Mr. Myers seems to fancy her. Maybe sheโs just got a way with men!โ
Even though no one thought much of Calliope, they didnโt dare say more considering how protective Silas was of her.
Calliope, well aware of the murmurs, didnโt really care. She calmly sat in the office, munching on an apple while occasionally glancing at Kelda, who just wrapped things up.
Kelda, unable to let it go, stared at Calliope. โI donโt see whatโs so special about you, besides being a bit pretty. But Silas doesnโt strike me as the shallow type. Surely, he sees more than just looks.โ
Not minding Keldaโs gaze, Calliope raised an eyebrow. โWhatever the case, you still owe me three favors.โ
โUgh!โ Kelda huffed. โFine, what do you want?โ
โHavenโt decided yet. But once I think of some, youโll be the first to know,โ Calliope said with a smile.
โIโm warning you, donโt push it.โ Kelda shot Calliope a stare before turning to leave.
A short while later, the door swung open. Calliope assumed it was Silas, but as she glanced up, she saw Gideon.
โUncleโฆโ
Gideon barely started when his gaze settled on Calliope; he was momentarily stunned, frowning, surprised Calliope was in Silasโs office.
โWhat are you doing here?โ Gideon asked, displeasure evident in his tone.
โIs it so strange for me to be in my husbandโs office? He even said he might hand over the company to me,โ Calliope replied, taking another bite of her apple and eyeing Gideon.
โWhat?โ Gideon looked at her, disbelief written all over his face. โHand the company over to you? Are you dreaming? Do you think my uncle is a fool?โ
โHeโs no fool, but he did say that,โ Calliope shrugged. โHeโs a good man. Much better than you, at least.โ
โYouโฆโ Gideon inhaled sharply. โMy uncle is just stringing you along. The Baker Group doesnโt even bear his name. What makes you think he can gift it to you?โ
He stepped closer, towering over Calliope. โCalliope, my uncle will tire of you soon enough. Donโt be so smug.โ
โAm I being smug?โ Calliope said innocently, โI donโt feel it at all.โ
โYou came here just to flaunt your status, didnโt you?โ Gideon chuckled. โYou think being Mrs. Myers will earn you respect? No one will like you. You have no background, no education, no skills. My uncleโs interest in you is just a passing fancy. And others wouldnโt even lay an eye on you. Everyoneโs waiting for the day you become the laughingstock. Theyโre all waiting to see you ditched. And the Baker Group has nothing to do with you!โ
Gideon leaned in, his face inches from Calliopeโs. His eyes locked onto hers, and he felt his heart race with an unfamiliar impulse.
There was a voice in his mind โ kiss her.
Her lips looked so inviting, soft and temptingโฆ His uncle must have tasted them, right?
Yet, despite having dated her for so long back in the day, he realized he never had the chance.
