Chapter 217
โYvette, you little sneak! How could you keep your wedding a secret from me? I heard youโre marrying into the wealthy Baker family of Capitalton. What, are you scared Iโd ask you for money, so you decided to keep me in the dark?โ
Trevor Langley burst in, grabbing a fistful of Yvetteโs hair as he shouted.
Yvetteโs head jerked back, and she let out a shriek of pain. Tears sprang to her eyes. โDad, that hurts! Dad, no, I wasnโt trying to hide it from you! I just hadnโt gotten around to telling you yet!โ
โHadnโt gotten around to it? What nonsense! You just think Iโm an embarrassment! You invited everyone else but left me out! What do you take me for? You are my damn child, remember that! Without me, youโd be nothing! I heard you gave your momโs side some money, but nothing for me? What, is she your real parent and Iโm not?โ
Yvetteโs eyes were red with pain, and she cried out, โIโll give you the money, just please let go! Youโre going to rip my scalp off!โ
Calliope watched, feeling her own scalp tingle in sympathy. Yvetteโs father was a real piece of work. But she found it amusing in a way. Neither Yvette nor her father were saints, so watching them fight wasnโt exactly a tragedy.
Trevor finally released Yvetteโs hair, pulled over a chair, and plopped into it, picking up a toothpick to idly clean his teeth.
Fleur was speechless, her expression one of shock. What kind of family was Yvette from?
โTrevor, what are you doing here causing trouble? This is Yvetteโs big day, and youโre just making a mess!โ Verena shouted.
Trevor sneered at her. โWhy shouldnโt I be involved in my daughterโs affairs? And donโt think I donโt know about you pocketing her money! We havenโt settled that score yet!โ
Eamon put a hand to his forehead, clearly taken aback by the family. He glanced over at Calliope for help.
Receiving his plea, Calliope rapped her knuckles on the table, drawing all eyes to her.
โLet me say a few words.โ
โAnd who are you? Where are your manners? You think you have a right to speak here?โ Trevor snapped.
โMe? Iโm your future son-in-lawโs uncleโs wife, the matriarch of the Baker family, and the wife of the Baker Groupโs CEO,โ Calliope introduced herself casually. โIn other words, your future son-in-law will be working under my husbandโs leadership. Do I have the right to speak now? Even Fleur wouldnโt dare speak to me like that. Do you have a problem with me?โ
Her words were calm but carried an undeniable authority.
Trevor and the others were momentarily stunned. They quickly did the mental math of what her position meant, and, realizing her connection to Silas, wisely decided not to cross her.
โYou all asked for an eight million dollar wedding gift, and I donโt see a problem with that,โ Calliope continued.
โCalliope!โ Fleur objected immediately, shooting her a glare, thinking she was stirring the pot.
Gideon also frowned as he glanced at Calliope, unsure of where she was going with this.
โRight? You think our request isnโt too much, donโt you?โ Verena eagerly chimed in. โThatโs why youโre the matriarch, so understanding and generous!โ
โWell, it is indeed not much. For an opulent family like the Bakers, a wedding gift of ten million isnโt unreasonable,โ Calliope curled her lips into a smile. โBut usually, in a high society match, whatever the groomโs family gives, the brideโs family matches with the same amount in a bridal gift.โ
