Chapter 359
As soon as the waiter left, Monty turned to Calliope with a grin plastered across his face, his tone as sugary as a fresh batch of maple syrup.
โCallie, Iโm really glad you decided to join us for dinner today! All this talk about leaving or not leavingโcome on, even if you signed that agreement, youโre still a Jewell through and through. Family doesnโt hold grudges overnight, right?โ
Monty shot a cheerful glance at Horatio and Valerian. โThey really do care about you! When they were kids, you know, didnโt know any better. And Lisette, well, sheโs younger than you, she didnโt get it either. Maybe she was just scared weโd favor you over her, so she put on that little act! These things, they happened so long ago. Canโt really blame anyone, can you?โ
โHoratio, Valerian, you guys know you owe her an apology, right?โ Montyโs gaze urged the two brothers to make amends with Calliope.
Calliope watched them with an amused expression. โWas it really just because you were kids?โ
Valerian didnโt seem too thrilled with Calliopeโs tone. He frowned but stayed quiet.
Horatio piped up, โCallie, yeah, we werenโt great. We just believed whatever Lisette said back then, but you shouldโve nudged us a little. Even if we didnโt believe you at first, you couldโve tried a bit harder!โ
โIt was all so long ago, donโt hold a grudge against Lisette or us. We were just kids, everyoneโs forgotten about it. Sure, you mightโve been falsely accused, but no real harm was done, right?โ
โAnd about your education, yeah, we mightโve misunderstood. But you never showed us your side of things. How were we supposed to know? If youโd been as vocal as Lisette, there wouldnโt have been any room for misunderstanding.โ
โAnyway, itโs all ancient history now. Youโre healthy and grown up, and honestly, thereโs no need to be so petty about it.โ
Horatio spoke as if it all had been just a minor misunderstanding, easily brushed aside.
Calliope looked up at them, then chuckled softly to herself.
โYeah, all these things are in the past.โ
She leisurely poured herself a glass of water. If she hadnโt been given a second chance, it wouldโve truly been in the pastโwhile they enjoyed their lives, sheโd have been nothing more than a forgotten ghost.
After taking a sip, she looked back up. โBut what if Lisette wanted to kill me? What if I had died because of Lisetteโs actions? Would that be something you could just move on from? Or would it still be all about Lisette, even if I were gone?โ
Valerian suddenly slammed his fist on the table, anger flashing in his eyes. โWhat are you talking about? Lisette wouldnโt murder you. Sure, she said some nasty things, but sheโs not some villain!โ
โCalliope, donโt project your dark thoughts onto Lisette, okay? She mightโve been a bit dramatic, sure, but she never actually hurt you. Itโs you whoโs always been so confrontational.โ
Calliope just stared at him.
Even now, their attitude hadnโt changed a bit. Thankfully, sheโd long since stopped considering them as part of her family.
She smirked, โHow exactly am I being confrontational? You guys invited me to dinner, remember? I didnโt exactly twist your arm into inviting me, did I?โ
