Chapter 359

As soon as the waiter left, Monty turned to Calliope with a grin plastered across his face, his tone as sugary as a fresh batch of maple syrup.

โ€œCallie, Iโ€™m really glad you decided to join us for dinner today! All this talk about leaving or not leavingโ€“come on, even if you signed that agreement, youโ€™re still a Jewell through and through. Family doesnโ€™t hold grudges overnight, right?โ€

Monty shot a cheerful glance at Horatio and Valerian. โ€œThey really do care about you! When they were kids, you know, didnโ€™t know any better. And Lisette, well, sheโ€™s younger than you, she didnโ€™t get it either. Maybe she was just scared weโ€™d favor you over her, so she put on that little act! These things, they happened so long ago. Canโ€™t really blame anyone, can you?โ€

โ€œHoratio, Valerian, you guys know you owe her an apology, right?โ€ Montyโ€™s gaze urged the two brothers to make amends with Calliope.

Calliope watched them with an amused expression. โ€œWas it really just because you were kids?โ€

Valerian didnโ€™t seem too thrilled with Calliopeโ€™s tone. He frowned but stayed quiet.

Horatio piped up, โ€œCallie, yeah, we werenโ€™t great. We just believed whatever Lisette said back then, but you shouldโ€™ve nudged us a little. Even if we didnโ€™t believe you at first, you couldโ€™ve tried a bit harder!โ€

โ€œIt was all so long ago, donโ€™t hold a grudge against Lisette or us. We were just kids, everyoneโ€™s forgotten about it. Sure, you mightโ€™ve been falsely accused, but no real harm was done, right?โ€

โ€œAnd about your education, yeah, we mightโ€™ve misunderstood. But you never showed us your side of things. How were we supposed to know? If youโ€™d been as vocal as Lisette, there wouldnโ€™t have been any room for misunderstanding.โ€

โ€œAnyway, itโ€™s all ancient history now. Youโ€™re healthy and grown up, and honestly, thereโ€™s no need to be so petty about it.โ€

Horatio spoke as if it all had been just a minor misunderstanding, easily brushed aside.

Calliope looked up at them, then chuckled softly to herself.

โ€œYeah, all these things are in the past.โ€

She leisurely poured herself a glass of water. If she hadnโ€™t been given a second chance, it wouldโ€™ve truly been in the pastโ€“while they enjoyed their lives, sheโ€™d have been nothing more than a forgotten ghost.

After taking a sip, she looked back up. โ€œBut what if Lisette wanted to kill me? What if I had died because of Lisetteโ€™s actions? Would that be something you could just move on from? Or would it still be all about Lisette, even if I were gone?โ€

Valerian suddenly slammed his fist on the table, anger flashing in his eyes. โ€œWhat are you talking about? Lisette wouldnโ€™t murder you. Sure, she said some nasty things, but sheโ€™s not some villain!โ€

โ€œCalliope, donโ€™t project your dark thoughts onto Lisette, okay? She mightโ€™ve been a bit dramatic, sure, but she never actually hurt you. Itโ€™s you whoโ€™s always been so confrontational.โ€

Calliope just stared at him.

Even now, their attitude hadnโ€™t changed a bit. Thankfully, sheโ€™d long since stopped considering them as part of her family.

She smirked, โ€œHow exactly am I being confrontational? You guys invited me to dinner, remember? I didnโ€™t exactly twist your arm into inviting me, did I?โ€
