Chapter 36

Valerian suddenly felt a surge of panic.

โ€œValerian, hold on,โ€ Calliope said, grabbing his arm. โ€œDo you really believe she twisted her ankle? Sheโ€™s faking it.โ€

โ€œCalliope, Lisette isnโ€™t like you. Stop making a scene!โ€

Valerian shook off Calliopeโ€™s hand and ignored her, rushing straight over to Lisette.

As Calliope watched him kneeling down, all frantic over Lisette, her eyes grew cold.

To someone who thought even her death was just a fuss, it was no surprise he saw her as nothing but a troublemaker.

Lisette was the only beloved sister, while she was just the troublesome, spiteful one.

Her beautiful eyes lowered slightly.

Even though she had expected this, there was still a sting in her heart. After all, he was her brotherโ€“a brother she had once cared for so deeply.

โ€œCallie,โ€ Norton said, gently ruffling Calliopeโ€™s hair. โ€œNeed me to help you out with something?โ€

Calliope shook her head. โ€œNo, thanks, Norton. Iโ€™ll handle my own stuff.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€

Norton didnโ€™t press further, but he glanced over at Valerian and let out a nearly inaudible sigh.

Callie was the sister they cherished most, yet in her own brotherโ€™s eyes, she didnโ€™t seem to matter much.

They wished, with all their hearts, that they were Callieโ€™s real brothers. Even if they werenโ€™t by blood, they wanted to give her the best the world had to offer.

โ€œI checked your car, and the brakes were indeed faulty. But Iโ€™ve fixed it now,โ€ the blond guy announced as he walked over, glancing at Norton. โ€œYou owe your sister a big thank you. If youโ€™d driven like that to the race, it could have been catastrophic.โ€

โ€œThe brakes? Really?โ€ Norton looked at him, shocked. โ€œI had a buddy modify it. It shouldnโ€™t have any issues.โ€

โ€œBeats me,โ€ the guy shrugged, โ€œbut faulty brakes can be deadly.โ€

โ€œIs it all good now? No other issues?โ€ Calliope asked, concerned.

โ€œI went over everything, should be fine now.โ€

With his task done, the blond guy gave Calliope a nod and left.

Calliope let out a sigh of relief.

In the previous life, Norton had indeed faced a crash because of brake failure during a race. The car eventually exploded. He survived, but his life was a shadow of its former self. His skin was severely burned, requiring countless surgeries; his body was so weakened that living was more painful than dying.

Why the brakes failed, she had never found out. Whether it was sabotage or a modification mishap was a mystery.

Thank goodness, this time she could prevent it from happening.

โ€œCallie, how did you know something was wrong with my car?โ€ Norton asked, puzzled.

Calliope showing up out of the blue with a mechanic was too much of a coincidence.

โ€œI just had a bad feeling, you know? Like a nagging intuition, so I brought someone to check,โ€ Calliope replied. โ€œDonโ€™t overthink it, Norton. Just be careful at the race. Iโ€™ll be waiting for you to come back a winner.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Norton smiled and uttered, โ€œIโ€™ll win you a prize!โ€

โ€œGreat!โ€ Calliope looked up, her face lighting up with anticipation.
