Chapter 402
โHey, I thought you werenโt coming back until tomorrow?โ Calliope asked, a hint of surprise in her voice.
Silas chuckled, โI missed you too much. Did you bring me the gift I wanted?โ
โYeah, I got it. Youโre back for good now, right? Not leaving again tomorrow?โ
โWhen did you get here? Why didnโt you tell me?โ she continued, her questions spilling out as they walked hand in hand under the starlit sky, painting a picture of serene romance.
Silas gently messed up her hair, his voice soft as a summer breeze, โI finished work early, just couldnโt wait to see you.โ
Meanwhile, Gideon stood at a distance, watching them with a hollow feeling in his chest.
โGideon, stop fooling yourself. Iโm your best option,โ came Yvetteโs voice from behind him. โWith Silas around, you know you canโt compete. Even if I let you go, sheโd never come back to you. And for the sake of the child Iโm carrying, please, just let it go.โ
Gideon turned to Yvette, his expression unreadable.
โGo home by yourself,โ he said flatly before driving away.
Yvette clenched her fists, frustration simmering beneath her skin.
โWhat are you doing out here in the cold? You donโt want my grandchild catching a chill!โ Fleurโs voice interjected, her presence as commanding as ever. โI made you some soup for the baby. Drink it before you leave.โ
Fleur glanced in the direction Gideon had driven off. โYou need to get used to it. Gideon will never only have eyes for you, nor will he always be by your side. If youโre marrying into this family, you should be prepared.โ
Yvette frowned, disbelief etched on her face. โWhat do you mean by that?โ
โIn families like ours,โ Fleur continued, her tone matter-of-fact, โitโs normal for men to have a few others on the side. Iโm just giving you a heads-up. If Gideon finds someone else, keep your mouth shut. Donโt think just because youโre marrying him, you own him. Youโre his wife, but that doesnโt give you the right to control him. Your job is to manage yourself and have the baby.โ
Fleur gave Yvette a pointed look. โI hope you werenโt naรฏve enough to think you could have some fairy-tale exclusive romance with Gideon. Wake up.โ
A small, cynical laugh escaped her lips. โLearn to turn a blind eye when necessary.โ
Yvette bit her lip, holding back words she wanted to say but didnโt dare utter. The wedding hadnโt even happened yet, and this was how they treated her.
But sheโd bide her time. Once married, she wouldnโt be so easily pushed around. Especially not by Calliope!
At the bar, Gideon nursed his drink, the silence heavy around him. His friends watched him with concern.
โWhatโs up with you, man?โ one of them asked. โYouโre getting married tomorrow, why the long face?โ
โYeah, last time you werenโt thrilled about the wedding, but you didnโt hit the bottle like this. Arenโt you marrying the woman you wanted this time? Whatโs there to be moody about?โ
โHey, you alright?โ
โPre-wedding jitters, maybe?โ
Gideon finally looked up, his eyes meeting theirs.
โI regret it,โ he confessed.
โWhat do you regret?โ They exchanged surprised glances. โDonโt tell me youโre regretting not marrying Calliope?โ
โThat canโt be. You were never into her. It was always Yvette you wanted, and now youโre getting her!โ
โYeah, if anyone should be sulking, itโs us. Weโre still single, living the lonely life over here!โ
