Chapter 60
Ever since her rebirth, almost every night was plagued by nightmares, forcing her to relive the darkest and most painful moments of her past. But whenever Silas was around, an inexplicable calm would settle over her.
The next afternoon, Calliope received a call from Fleur while she was staring blankly into the backyard of her fondue restaurant.
On the other end, Fleur was cussing her out vehemently. โCalliope, youโll regret this. If Gideon marries another woman, itโll be too late for tears!โ
Calliopeโs response was cool and measured as she replied, โWell, then I hope my dear nephew finds someone soon. Youโd love to be a grandmother, wouldnโt you?โ
Fleur was momentarily speechless, her frustration bubbling over. โCalliope, arenโt you worried about Gideon marrying someone else?โ
โWhy should I be? His marriage wonโt change a thing for me. Iโll still be his aunt-in-law, and donโt worry, the wedding gift from me will be generous,โ Calliope said with a sly smile. โYvette seems like a good match. Why donโt you arrange something? Gideonโs not getting any younger; he should settle down before itโs too late!โ
โYou! Calliope, youโre impossible!โ Fleur huffed before hanging up in a fury.
Calliope took a leisurely sip of her iced coffee, the sun warming her face just right. With nothing better to do, she scrolled through her Twitter feed.
To her amusement, she stumbled upon a post Gideon had shared earlier that morning. It was a selfie of him and Yvette, looking quite cozy together.
Below Gideonโs tweet was Yvetteโs own post with the same photo, thanking him and announcing that she was now his personal assistant and ready to give it her all.
How interesting, Calliope mused. Gideon had brought Yvette into his company. As far as she knew, Yvette wasnโt particularly skilled and had a reputation for being difficult to get along with. Her working with Gideon was sure to ruffle some feathers.
It was clear this little Twitter display was meant for her eyes. Calliope barely knew Yvette, but Yvette had added her on Twitter, making her intentions obvious: to provoke Calliope.
There was a time when Yvetteโs antics would have gotten under her skin, leading to heated arguments with Gideon.
But no more.
Calliope realized that to someone who didnโt love her, even her most desperate pleas were as insignificant as swinging on a swing set.
Now, these tweets barely registered with her. Just two people trying to get a rise out of her. If she let them, sheโd only be playing the fool.
Instead of being bothered, Calliope casually liked both of their posts and left a comment.
โCongrats, Gideon! Whenโs the wedding? Iโve got the gift ready!โ
Calliopeโs comment quickly stirred up a storm.
Friends and acquaintances of Calliope and Gideon began to like and comment on the post.
Some, unaware of the situation, congratulated Gideon on his stealthy engagement. Others joked about how Gideon missed being the groom last time and shouldnโt let someone else beat him to it now.
Before long, Calliope noticed Silas had also commented below her post.
