Chapter 72

Everyone froze for a moment. They all just stared numbly at Silas, no one saying a word, almost forgetting to even say hello.

โ€œAm I interrupting something?โ€ Silas asked in a voice that was surprisingly gentle.

โ€œNo, not at all!โ€ Portia quickly replied.

Calliope led Silas into the room, and after they sat down, the atmosphere turned a bit tense. Nobody dared to speak. They all knew Silas, but they were used to seeing him as the cool uncle figure, someone they looked up to, almost like an elder.

But now, he walked in as Calliopeโ€™s husband, suddenly on the same level as them. Even if Silas was fine with it, they still needed time to adjust!

Mavis had interacted with Silas the most, given that her mentor, Uriah, was good friends with him. But still, sheโ€™d always seen him as a sort of elder, treating him with respect. Now that he was her friendโ€™s husband, things feltโ€ฆ different.

There was a certain amount of respect everyone held for Silas. The lively chatter from before had vanished, leaving the room feeling like a cold cellar.

โ€œAm I that intimidating?โ€ Silas noticed the shift in the room.

โ€œIโ€™m Callieโ€™s husband now. Whatever you want to say, just go ahead. No need to be scared of me,โ€ Silas assured them.

โ€œReally?โ€ Portia asked, her innocent eyes fixated on him.

Silas nodded.

With a slightly more approachable air about him, and having had a few too many drinks, Portia found her courage.

โ€œIf I ask you something, you promise you wonโ€™t get mad?โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t get mad.โ€

โ€œOkay, here goes!โ€

Portia leaned in with her bright eyes narrowing slightly, curiosity piqued. โ€œSilas, I heard you have a โ€˜first loveโ€™ โ€“ a special woman you never quite got over, thatโ€™s why you always kept distance with other females. Is that true?โ€

โ€œAnd if so, does that mean youโ€™re going to hurt our Callie? Callieโ€™s your wife now, and I donโ€™t care if that โ€˜first loveโ€™ thing is real or not, but since Callieโ€™s with you, you better not treat her badly because of it! You know, that jerk did that to her. Callie loved him so much, but he was always hung up on his โ€˜first loveโ€™!โ€

Portia picked up a bottle, waving it around in her tipsy indignation.

Mavis felt a pang of panic. According to Uriah, Silas was very sensitive about that โ€œfirst loveโ€, which was a taboo topic for Silas. Portia, with her loose lips, might have just poked the bear.

Mavis wanted to cover Portiaโ€™s mouth, but it was too late.

Archie, sitting quietly, didnโ€™t say much. He didnโ€™t fear Silas but rather leaned back, watching and waiting for Silasโ€™s reaction. His gaze carried a hint of hostility.

โ€œWhy so silent? What, did you marry Callie, share a bed with her, but still have eyes for someone else? That would make you a jerk too!โ€

Portia threw a punch in the air.

Calliope was in shock. โ€œPortia, I think youโ€™ve had enough to drink!โ€

She tried to intervene, but Archie, too, decided to stir the pot.

โ€œPortiaโ€™s got a point, Mr. Myers. Youโ€™ve married Callie, shared lifeโ€™s intimacies with her, so you should let go of that โ€˜first loveโ€™, at least while youโ€™re married. Give her the commitment she deserves.โ€

Archie lifted his eyes, swirling the drink in his glass. A smirk played on his lips, a mix of mischief and a touch of charm.

With a voice so soft it was almost hard to catch, he added, โ€œCallieโ€™s more important to me than my life. Please, treat her well.โ€
