Chapter 8

โ€œSorry for what? Explain yourself. What did you do that makes you think you owe me an apology?โ€ Calliope smirked. โ€œLisette, why do you always feel the need to say sorry? If you really mean it, then get on your knees and apologize! Is โ€˜sorryโ€™ just a word to you? So, if I just killed you and said โ€˜sorry,โ€™ would that fix everything?โ€

โ€œCallieโ€ฆโ€ Lisette was taken aback by Calliopeโ€™s sudden outburst of anger. Her face turned a bit pale.

โ€œCalliope, what on earth is going on with you? What did Lisette ever do to deserve this?โ€ Zelda stepped protectively in front of Lisette. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you start by explaining what happened at the wedding yesterday?โ€

โ€œWhat happened? Didnโ€™t you see it all? I married Silas. Is there a problem with that?โ€

โ€œAre you out of your mind?โ€ Zelda said, exasperated. โ€œDo you really think you can handle someone like Silas? Do you think youโ€™re good enough for him? And what about Gideon? Werenโ€™t you head over heels for him? Why canโ€™t you ever get anything right, not even keeping your man?โ€

Her three brothers remained silent, glancing at Calliope with raised eyebrows and a hint of disapproval.

โ€œCalliope, tell us what exactly happened yesterday. We need to understand the situation before we can fix it. We owe Mr. Myers a proper thank you, after all,โ€ Monty interjected. โ€œAnd what about Gideon? Did you do something to upset him again? You better make it up to him, or who else are you going to marry?โ€

Calliope looked from Zelda to Monty, then back again. And suddenly, she chuckled openly at them. โ€œGideon ditching me on our wedding day to run after his old flame is my fault? Why am I not good enough for Silas? Am I really that worthless in your eyes? Do I have to beg them to marry me? Is my life over if I donโ€™t have Gideon?โ€

Zelda frowned, clearly frustrated. โ€œCalliope, why do you always have to be so difficult? You always let us down!โ€

โ€œCallie, Mom and Dad are just looking out for you!โ€ Lisette chimed in.

โ€œNo need.โ€ Calliopeโ€™s gaze was cold. โ€œIf they really cared, theyโ€™d give me back what Grandpa left for me!โ€ She extended her hand toward Lisette. โ€œWhere are the earrings, the bracelet, and the brooch Grandpa left me? Didnโ€™t you say you just wanted to borrow them? Or did you plan on keeping them?โ€

Her voice sharpened as she took a step closer. โ€œAs an adopted daughter, donโ€™t you have any sense of propriety? My things are not yours. They were left to me by my grandpa!โ€

Lisetteโ€™s face paled, then hardened. โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ll go get them for you!โ€

โ€œCalliope, you still havenโ€™t explained yourself. Why are you being so harsh on your sister?โ€

Without warning, Zelda swung her hand toward Calliopeโ€™s face. But Calliope was faster. She caught Zeldaโ€™s wrist midair, gripping it firmly before the slap could land. โ€œYou side with an adopted daughter over your own flesh and blood. Youโ€™re no saint yourself!โ€

Calliope abruptly released Zelda, causing her to fall back onto the couch.

โ€œCalliope, are you trying to cause a rebellion here?โ€ Zelda shrieked.

Calliope scoffed. โ€œAre you the queen? Am I staging a coup?โ€

Then she turned to Lisette, eyes flashing with disdain. โ€œReturn everything you took from me!โ€

Before Lisette could respond, Calliope was already heading upstairs. โ€œNever mind, Iโ€™ll get it myself. I donโ€™t trust you not to โ€˜accidentallyโ€™ misplace everything.โ€

Please let us know if you find any errors, so we can fix them.
