Chapter 101
I smirked, cutting Jace off. โDonโt tell me you mistook her for me.โ
His mouth hung open as he stared.
But I didnโt let him off easily. โLetโs be realโhow many times have you actually kissed me?โ
His expression turned stormy. Weโd been together for over three years. We held hands and hugged, but passionate kissing was almost nonexistent. And when it did happen, it was chasteโa kiss on the hand, cheek, or forehead. If our lips ever touched, it was a quick peck.
My words hit him hard. Frustration boiled over. He let go, running a hand through his hair. โYeah, I was an idiot. I got caught up in the moment and kissed her. But it didnโt mean anything.โ
โOh, so it only counts if you sleep with her?โ I retorted sarcastically.
Jace was losing it. โIs that what you think of me? If I was that kind of guy, donโt you think I wouldโve slept with you long ago? Do you really think weโd be like this now if I had?โ
I paused, then laughed. So, he was saying that if weโd slept together, Iโd have let him off the hook? What kind of backward thinking was that? Did he really believe we were stuck in some outdated world where a girlโs worth depended on one man?
I bypassed that nonsense. I hit him where it hurt. โBut you werenโt into me, were you? Thatโs why we never slept together.โ
His words, once deeply cutting, were now my sharpest weapon.
Jaceโs pupils contracted. โRea, is this really something we canโt move past?โ
โWe already have,โ I reminded him. โWe broke up. Youโre the one clinging to the past.โ
โBroke up?โ Jace sneered. โDonโt think I donโt know what youโre up to. You broke up with me so you could run off to that lighting guy. Youโve been involved with him for a while now. You were living together in Chiverton, werenโt you?โ
I wasnโt surprised he knew about Chivertonโhis mother had mentioned it. But I didnโt expect him to twist it into Hayden and I having a long-term relationship.
โBelieve what you want,โ I said coolly. โBut I met him after we broke upโunlike you, who made a move on your close friend Desmondโs wife while he was still alive.โ I wasnโt letting his accusations go unchecked.
Bringing up his affair with Tanya hit a nerve. Whether it was guilt or something else, it rattled him.
โSo now youโre defending him, keeping him around because you want to mix business with pleasure, right?โ
Jace had a real talent for twisting things.
โThink whatever helps you sleep at night,โ I replied, not bothering to deny it.
Jaceโs face turned a sickly green. โI can make him disappear from the industry right now. You know that, right?โ
โMm-hmm, I believe you,โ I said, locking eyes with him. โBut if he goes, I go. If he disappears, Iโm disappearing with him.โ
โYouโฆโ Jace pointed at me.
โJace, youโre the one who played the betrayal card. You claimed youโd had enough because we knew each other too well. Now that Iโm giving you exactly what you wanted, you still pester me. Donโt you think thatโs beneath you?โ I was done protecting his ego.
โPester me? Iโm trying to stop you from making a huge mistake. You have no idea how twisted men can be,โ Jace said, yanking at his collar.
โI donโt need to imagine it. Youโve already shown me,โ I shot back, stopping him. His eyes widened in shock. He couldnโt believe I saw him for who he was. I cut through the tension. โLet me make this clear: as long as Hayden Hartโs here, so am I. If you so much as try to harm him, Iโll follow him.โ
With that, I turned and walked away, not looking back as Jaceโs hand dropped in defeat. I didnโt see the look in his eyesโthe one that said heโd just lost everything.
