Chapter 101

I smirked, cutting Jace off. โ€œDonโ€™t tell me you mistook her for me.โ€

His mouth hung open as he stared.

But I didnโ€™t let him off easily. โ€œLetโ€™s be realโ€”how many times have you actually kissed me?โ€

His expression turned stormy. Weโ€™d been together for over three years. We held hands and hugged, but passionate kissing was almost nonexistent. And when it did happen, it was chasteโ€”a kiss on the hand, cheek, or forehead. If our lips ever touched, it was a quick peck.

My words hit him hard. Frustration boiled over. He let go, running a hand through his hair. โ€œYeah, I was an idiot. I got caught up in the moment and kissed her. But it didnโ€™t mean anything.โ€

โ€œOh, so it only counts if you sleep with her?โ€ I retorted sarcastically.

Jace was losing it. โ€œIs that what you think of me? If I was that kind of guy, donโ€™t you think I wouldโ€™ve slept with you long ago? Do you really think weโ€™d be like this now if I had?โ€

I paused, then laughed. So, he was saying that if weโ€™d slept together, Iโ€™d have let him off the hook? What kind of backward thinking was that? Did he really believe we were stuck in some outdated world where a girlโ€™s worth depended on one man?

I bypassed that nonsense. I hit him where it hurt. โ€œBut you werenโ€™t into me, were you? Thatโ€™s why we never slept together.โ€

His words, once deeply cutting, were now my sharpest weapon.

Jaceโ€™s pupils contracted. โ€œRea, is this really something we canโ€™t move past?โ€

โ€œWe already have,โ€ I reminded him. โ€œWe broke up. Youโ€™re the one clinging to the past.โ€

โ€œBroke up?โ€ Jace sneered. โ€œDonโ€™t think I donโ€™t know what youโ€™re up to. You broke up with me so you could run off to that lighting guy. Youโ€™ve been involved with him for a while now. You were living together in Chiverton, werenโ€™t you?โ€

I wasnโ€™t surprised he knew about Chivertonโ€”his mother had mentioned it. But I didnโ€™t expect him to twist it into Hayden and I having a long-term relationship.

โ€œBelieve what you want,โ€ I said coolly. โ€œBut I met him after we broke upโ€”unlike you, who made a move on your close friend Desmondโ€™s wife while he was still alive.โ€ I wasnโ€™t letting his accusations go unchecked.

Bringing up his affair with Tanya hit a nerve. Whether it was guilt or something else, it rattled him.

โ€œSo now youโ€™re defending him, keeping him around because you want to mix business with pleasure, right?โ€

Jace had a real talent for twisting things.

โ€œThink whatever helps you sleep at night,โ€ I replied, not bothering to deny it.

Jaceโ€™s face turned a sickly green. โ€œI can make him disappear from the industry right now. You know that, right?โ€

โ€œMm-hmm, I believe you,โ€ I said, locking eyes with him. โ€œBut if he goes, I go. If he disappears, Iโ€™m disappearing with him.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Jace pointed at me.

โ€œJace, youโ€™re the one who played the betrayal card. You claimed youโ€™d had enough because we knew each other too well. Now that Iโ€™m giving you exactly what you wanted, you still pester me. Donโ€™t you think thatโ€™s beneath you?โ€ I was done protecting his ego.

โ€œPester me? Iโ€™m trying to stop you from making a huge mistake. You have no idea how twisted men can be,โ€ Jace said, yanking at his collar.

โ€œI donโ€™t need to imagine it. Youโ€™ve already shown me,โ€ I shot back, stopping him. His eyes widened in shock. He couldnโ€™t believe I saw him for who he was. I cut through the tension. โ€œLet me make this clear: as long as Hayden Hartโ€™s here, so am I. If you so much as try to harm him, Iโ€™ll follow him.โ€

With that, I turned and walked away, not looking back as Jaceโ€™s hand dropped in defeat. I didnโ€™t see the look in his eyesโ€”the one that said heโ€™d just lost everything.
