Chapter 107
โMr. Johnston, Iโm being subtle now, but my actions could be far worse. If youโre so worried, why donโt you just take her away, orโฆโ I glanced at Wayne and continued, โMaybe I should assign someone to babysit her around the clock?โ
Jace didnโt catch the hint. โSure, if youโre watching her, Iโd feel even better.โ
โNot happening. I have better things to do,โ I snapped, hanging up.
Tanya interjected, โYou donโt have to be so hostile. I can take care of myself.โ
โMs. Twain, you have all your limbs and a working brain, so yes, I believe you can. But accidents happen unexpectedly,โ I said, noticing Demi trying to stifle her laughter.
โMr. Johnston suggested on the call that someone should be with you constantly. Although, I donโt think 24/7 is necessary. After all, when youโre sleeping, only someone close can truly protect you, right?โ I added pointedly.
I used to feel sympathy for her after Desmondโs death, but now I understood the saying, โNot everyone who seems pitiful is innocent.โ
Turning to Wayne, I said, โMr. Johnston, since you and Ms. Twain are both new here, why donโt you two familiarize yourselves with the amusement park grounds together? And ensure her safety while youโre at it.โ
Wayne looked shocked. โRea, youโโ
โMr. Johnston,โ I interrupted, โIn the company, youโre the Executive Director, my superior. But here, Iโm the project lead. Everyone in this park follows my orders.โ
This was special authority Jace had granted me at the projectโs outset, unused until now, with the project nearing completion.
Wayne was speechless, and Tanyaโs face flushed crimson.
โI donโt need it. I can handle my own safety,โ Tanya insisted.
How could she not know Wayne and Jace are brothers? Flirting with Jace while constantly around Wayneโif that didnโt bother her, she must be worried about Jace overthinking it if he ever found out.
โIโve already said accidents happen. And besides, heโs not just here to protect youโitโs part of his duties. Ms. Twain, donโt overthink this,โ I said firmly, leaving her no escape.
Tanya was speechless, turning to Wayne for support. But he remained silent, merely agreeing, โAlright, Iโll follow your instructions.โ
That was the final blow, silencing Tanya.
โAlright, everyone, back to work,โ I commanded.
Tanya was clearly angry but complied. As she walked away, I overheard her whispering to Wayne, โHow could you agree to this? Sheโs obviously trying to humiliate us!โ
โYouโre overthinking it. Sheโs just doing her job and doesnโt want you to get hurt,โ Wayne replied, causing me to chuckle quietly.
But that small victory brought a pang of guilt. Perhaps I shouldnโt have vented my frustration with Jace and Tanya on Wayne.
Then again, he chose to be here.
โKeira, that was epic,โ Demi said, giving me a thumbs-up.
โGet back to work, or Iโll make you Ms. Twainโs 24-hour babysitter,โ I teased playfully.
She quickly shook her head and returned to her work. โIโm on it. Working super hard!โ
As everyone dispersed, my assertive demeanor faded. The more assertive Iโd been, the tighter and more bitter my chest felt. It wasnโt enough for Jace to hurt meโnow he had to add insult to injury by bringing Tanya here to torment me.
Did he think I hadnโt been humiliated enough? That I hadnโt suffered enough?
Suddenly, the light dimmed, and a hand appeared before me, obscuring my vision. Just as I was about to push it away, Haydenโs voice came from beside me, โYou handled that well.โ
He moved his hand, revealing a lollipop.
I looked up at him. โA reward,โ he simply said.
