Chapter 110
I returned to the office; Jace was already there. "Mr. Johnston, here's my resignation letter," I said, handing him the paper I'd held onto far too long. "I already submitted it electronically through HR."
Jace barely glanced at it before tossing it onto his desk. "You're really taking this too far," he said, his eyes icy.
He thought I was being dramatic, but honestly, I'd never caused trouble. When I first moved in with the Johnstons, I was essentially a guest, with no right to make waves. And when I developed feelings for Jace, I certainly wasn't going to stir the pot. Before my parents' accident, I was a spoiled child who could throw a fit; but after moving in with the Johnstons, causing a scene was no longer in my nature.
"Do I look like someone who causes trouble? When have I ever caused you any?" I asked, maintaining a steady voice.
Jace opened his mouth, but no words came out. But I was done holding back. "The only one who's ever messed things up between us is you. To you, I've always been a mere playthingโsomething you pat and play with when bored. But when things get interesting in your life, you forget I even exist."
"You really think that of me? You're heartless," Jace retorted.
He never saw his own flaws; whatever I said would simply bounce off him. I offered a bitter smile. "Yeah, I'm heartless."
"What kind of attitude is that? Are you saying I've wronged you?" Jace sounded ready to explode.
I met his gaze directly. "No, you're perfect. I'm the one who wants to end things, so obviously, I'm the heartless one, right?"
His expression darkened. "Cut the sarcasm."
"What do you want me to say?" I asked, keeping my voice even. "Right now, you're picking apart everything I do and say. Wouldn't it be easier if I left? Then you wouldn't have to see me, and you wouldn't be so angry all the time."
Jace tapped his fingers on the desk, his frustration evident. "Rea, don't think I don't know why you're acting like this. It's not because of meโit's because you've found someone else."
So, he was going to blame me, huh?
"You've been involved with Hayden Hart for a while now, haven't you?" Jace accused, getting straight to the point.
He was so convinced of his own narrative that I didn't bother denying it. "Not as long as you've been with Ms. Twain," I shot back.
Jace jumped from his chair. "So you really are with him?"
Chapter 110
Oh, so this was a setup to get me to confess.
"That's my business, and it's none of your concern. Jace, we broke up. You agreed to it," I reminded him.
"I didn't agree," Jace snapped, taking me by surprise.
His shamelessness never ceased to amaze me. He circled the desk in two strides and grabbed my arm, pulling me against his chest roughly. Holding me tightly, he growled, "Rea, have you forgotten who you are? You're my girl. You've been mine since the day you moved into my house."
He looked furious, but I wouldn't back down. I met his gaze. "Yeah, I used to think I was going to be your future wife, always playing the perfect girlfriend. But you're the one who strayed. If other girls are so much betterโif a pregnant widow is really your typeโshouldn't I just step aside?"
"Stop talking nonsense. There's nothing between me and Tanya," Jace denied.
"Wow, Jace, I didn't think your standards could sink this low. You kissed her, and that's nothing? So what counts as something? Sleeping with her? Or maybe getting her pregnant too?" My words landed like punches.
