Chapter 114
In the end, I couldn't bear the thought of the amusement park being anything less than perfect. This place was my dad's dream—a promise he made before he died in a car accident. I needed it to be flawless, so I agreed to help.
But now, instead of being an official team member, I was merely an unpaid consultant, working behind the scenes. Whatever; as long as the amusement park turned out amazing. Besides, I had nothing better to do. Staying busy was far preferable to sitting around.
That evening, I went to the Holiday Inn to meet Hayden about the project. Leaving, I noticed the apartment across the hall was locked. The idea of a stranger moving in soon unsettled me. Then it struck me: why not rent it myself?
Luckily, the landlord's name and number were on the door. I called immediately, but when I explained my interest, she hesitated. "Well… I've already received a deposit from someone else. I can't just back out now."
"Ms. Brown, return his deposit—double it. I'll cover the difference and pay more rent than he's offering," I said without hesitation. A little extra cash for peace of mind? Worth it. Money talks.
Having money was incredibly advantageous—it bought peace of mind and influenced others to bend the rules. Ms. Brown, clearly tempted, readily agreed to speak with the current tenant and promised to contact me.
After hanging up, I drove to the Holiday Inn. Stepping into the lobby, I saw Tanya. Yes, it's a hotel—she could be there for any reason. But my gut told me she was there for me. Sure enough, she looked up as I approached and called out, "Ms. Kay." Waiting for me? She must really need to talk.
"If you're here about work, you've got the wrong person. I already quit," I snapped before she could speak, making no attempt to hide my annoyance. I was still angry. My resignation was partly her fault. I'd considered letting it go, given her pregnancy, but now that she was seeking me out, why should I hold back?
"I'm here to talk to you about that," Tanya said softly.
I'd clashed with Tanya more than once. She could play any role—sweet and charming one minute, cold and calculating the next—and I never held back. But I didn't expect her to reappear, still attempting her innocent act. No, she wasn't merely playing the innocent victim; she was more like a girl who flirted with anyone for attention, shamelessly doing whatever it took to get what she wanted.

"Oh? Then I'm all ears," I said, sitting across from her.
"I was only at the amusement park for work. That's it. You're reading too much into it," she began, affecting innocence.
I let out a sarcastic laugh. "But it seems like you were reading too much into things. I asked you to work with Wayne and familiarize yourself with the park, and you thought that meant you should run and tattle to Jace?"
She quickly shook her head. "I didn't tattle. Jace called me, and I just mentioned it. I didn't expect him to…"
She trailed off, but I knew where she was going. Jace, in a fit of rage, had fired me—me, his former fiancée and, frankly, his right-hand woman—because of her.
So, she wasn't here to clear the air; she was here to gloat.
"He has tunnel vision when it comes to love. Once his hormones kick in, he does all kinds of stupid things. Nothing surprising there," I said, watching Tanya's expression sour. But I smiled. "You probably don't know this, but his close friends have a nickname for him. They call him a 'dumb husky.'"
