Chapter 127

โ€œWelcome aboard, Ms. Kay,โ€ Ron said, shaking my hand. He then summoned someone to assist with the paperwork. Within thirty minutes, I was officially employed.

Thatโ€™s when it hit meโ€”Jace hadn't approved my resignation. But if necessary, I could always ask Matthew; heโ€™d support me.

My phone buzzed repeatedly; Iโ€™d ignored it while speaking with Ron. It was Lena. โ€œWhere are you? Iโ€™m off todayโ€”want to hang out?โ€

Lena having a day off was unusual. Sheโ€™d been swamped with work lately due to the peak baby season.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re finally getting a break from delivering babies?โ€ I teased.

โ€œYeah, itโ€™s like all these moms decided to sync up their due dates, and now suddenly theyโ€™re all holding off,โ€ Lena groaned. Iโ€™d heard this before.

Lately, people planned everything meticulously, even their babies' births. Some followed bizarre superstitions, consulting monks to determine optimal conception and birth times, believing it would benefit their children.

What they missed was that aiming for perfection often meant that being average could be the real victory.

โ€œAre you home? Iโ€™ll come over.โ€ I didn't want her to travel on her rare day off.

โ€œYeah, come on over!โ€

โ€œHow about we have a drink or two at lunch?โ€ I asked, grinning.

โ€œSounds good. Iโ€™ll handle the food, you bring the wine,โ€ Lena replied, enthusiastically.

I ended the call and checked the other missed calls from unknown numbersโ€”likely more companies Iโ€™d applied to. If they were truly interested, theyโ€™d call again.

I grabbed wine, fruit, and a tea maker, anticipating tea.

When Lena opened the door, she took the items, noticing the tea maker. She kissed my cheek. โ€œYouโ€™re seriously the best. Iโ€™ve been wanting one of these forever but just havenโ€™t had the time.โ€

โ€œI figured even if you did buy it, you wouldnโ€™t have time to use it,โ€ I joked.

Lena paused, then quipped, โ€œTime is like a womanโ€™s cleavageโ€”if you squeeze it, you can always find some.โ€

I laughed, glancing at her petite chest. โ€œNot always. Can you squeeze any out?โ€

I wasnโ€™t trying to be hurtful, but Lena was slender. In summer, she often wore an unpadded bra with little difference.

โ€œDonโ€™t underestimate me. Someday, this small chest will be a treasure for my baby. Yours might be bigger, but it might not be as useful,โ€ Lena retorted. She clearly knew about both delivering and raising children.

โ€œThen when the time comes, weโ€™ll both have babies, and you can breastfeed them both,โ€ I teased.

Lena playfully kicked me. โ€œOnly you would come up with something like that.โ€

We laughed, but my phone rang again. It was another unknown number. Assuming it was a potential employer, I answered, โ€œHello, Keira Kay speaking.โ€

โ€œMs. Kay, your wedding dress has arrived. Weโ€™d like to schedule a fitting appointment.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I was shocked. โ€œYou must have the wrong number.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think so,โ€ the caller replied, reciting my number.

It was correct. But I hadnโ€™t ordered a wedding dress. What kind of prank was this?
