Chapter 127
โWelcome aboard, Ms. Kay,โ Ron said, shaking my hand. He then summoned someone to assist with the paperwork. Within thirty minutes, I was officially employed.
Thatโs when it hit meโJace hadn't approved my resignation. But if necessary, I could always ask Matthew; heโd support me.
My phone buzzed repeatedly; Iโd ignored it while speaking with Ron. It was Lena. โWhere are you? Iโm off todayโwant to hang out?โ
Lena having a day off was unusual. Sheโd been swamped with work lately due to the peak baby season.
โSo, youโre finally getting a break from delivering babies?โ I teased.
โYeah, itโs like all these moms decided to sync up their due dates, and now suddenly theyโre all holding off,โ Lena groaned. Iโd heard this before.
Lately, people planned everything meticulously, even their babies' births. Some followed bizarre superstitions, consulting monks to determine optimal conception and birth times, believing it would benefit their children.
What they missed was that aiming for perfection often meant that being average could be the real victory.
โAre you home? Iโll come over.โ I didn't want her to travel on her rare day off.
โYeah, come on over!โ
โHow about we have a drink or two at lunch?โ I asked, grinning.
โSounds good. Iโll handle the food, you bring the wine,โ Lena replied, enthusiastically.
I ended the call and checked the other missed calls from unknown numbersโlikely more companies Iโd applied to. If they were truly interested, theyโd call again.
I grabbed wine, fruit, and a tea maker, anticipating tea.
When Lena opened the door, she took the items, noticing the tea maker. She kissed my cheek. โYouโre seriously the best. Iโve been wanting one of these forever but just havenโt had the time.โ
โI figured even if you did buy it, you wouldnโt have time to use it,โ I joked.
Lena paused, then quipped, โTime is like a womanโs cleavageโif you squeeze it, you can always find some.โ
I laughed, glancing at her petite chest. โNot always. Can you squeeze any out?โ
I wasnโt trying to be hurtful, but Lena was slender. In summer, she often wore an unpadded bra with little difference.
โDonโt underestimate me. Someday, this small chest will be a treasure for my baby. Yours might be bigger, but it might not be as useful,โ Lena retorted. She clearly knew about both delivering and raising children.
โThen when the time comes, weโll both have babies, and you can breastfeed them both,โ I teased.
Lena playfully kicked me. โOnly you would come up with something like that.โ
We laughed, but my phone rang again. It was another unknown number. Assuming it was a potential employer, I answered, โHello, Keira Kay speaking.โ
โMs. Kay, your wedding dress has arrived. Weโd like to schedule a fitting appointment.โ
โWhat?โ I was shocked. โYou must have the wrong number.โ
โI donโt think so,โ the caller replied, reciting my number.
It was correct. But I hadnโt ordered a wedding dress. What kind of prank was this?
