Chapter 147
I had always relied on my skills, not connections. Even at RiverwaveCorp, where everyone perceived me as the future CEO's fiancรฉe, I refused to be merely an accessory.
After a week, I reviewed all the marketing clients' files and assessed the company's operations. I also evaluated each marketing team member's performance over the past six months. Then, I adjusted the workload and implemented a new incentive-based reward and punishment system.
I aimed to inspire, not intimidate. My goal was to encourage everyone to give their best, not only for personal gain but for the company's success. This was also my way of repaying the company for its faith in me, despite Jace's pressure.
Just as I felt optimistic about the marketing department's direction, I received devastating news. The team reported that all our clients were attempting to terminate their contracts. Even prospective clients were inventing excuses to withdraw.
I immediately suspected Jace's involvement. Unable to pressure the company into dismissing me, he had resorted to underhanded tacticsโpoaching our clients to force my removal.
Taking responsibility, I informed Ron. After listening, he simply smiled. "Don't worry. Any client he could steal wasn't truly ours. We'll find new ones."
His nonchalant response surprised me. I presented him with the reports, highlighting that Jace had taken nearly eighty percent of our clients.
"It's fine," Ron said, his confidence unwavering. "As long as they don't take you, I'm sure you'll attract new clients."
I appreciated his trust, but his attitude seemed unusual.
"Shouldn't you inform the CEO?" I asked cautiously. "I don't mean to overstep, but losing this many clients without warning could jeopardize your position if he discovers it later."
Ron chuckled, a sound that suggested I was missing something. "Ms. Kay, I think I finally understand why RiverwaveCorp's CEO is so reluctant to let you go."
Really?
I sensed he hadn't fully explained himself.
He continued, "Regarding your concern, I've already reported everything. Since RiverwaveCorp interfered with your hiring, upper management has been aware. We anticipated these issues, so there's no need to worry. We have it under control."
So, I was overreacting.
The conversation concluded naturally. I nodded slightly. "I simply don't want to be the reason the company fails."
Ron dismissed my concern with a wave of his hand. "Don't worry. You can be as much of a troublemaker as you like."
What?
He grinned, revealing a perfect set of white teeth. "I mean, we trust your abilities. You won't let the company down."
I forced a smile. "I'm not a miracle worker."
"Oh, yes you are!" Ron retorted playfully. "You're a goddess."
I sighed inwardly.
The company's lack of pressure, ironically, increased my frustration.
I never imagined Jace would stoop so low. His prioritizing of his ego over the company's well-being, treating it as a game, wasn't just harming this companyโit could destabilize the entire industry.
This company, while not the largest, possessed exceptional technical skills and strength. With more employees like Hayden, it could truly flourish.
I couldn't allow Jace's reckless actions to ruin such a promising companyโor let myself be the cause of its downfall. I needed someone to stop Jace, and that person was Matthew. This wasn't a phone call; I needed a face-to-face meeting.
That meant going to the Johnston residence.
