Chapter 155
โWho the father isโฆ well, thatโs her business. If youโre that curious, why donโt you ask her yourself?โ I shook my head.
Demi snorted. โYeah, right. I donโt have time for that drama. Iโd rather spend my free moments swooning over Mr. Hart.โ
Hearing Haydenโs name, I glanced at the clock. He still wasnโt back. โSo, are you calling me after work now? Or sneaking off to the restroom again to avoid it?โ I asked casually.
โKeira! What do you take me for? Iโm not that kind of person!โ Demi protested. โBesides, Mr. Hartโs been surprisingly chill latelyโhe let us off early again today.โ
โOh, really? How long ago?โ
โAbout half an hour. Iโm already home, chilling on the couch.โ
As Demi talked, I calculated Haydenโs commute. He should have been back by now. But his apartment was still quiet. Maybe he was delayed.
โYou guys are finishing work this early and not doing any overtime? Are you sure the project will be done on time?โ I asked.
There was a pause, then I heard Demi swallow. โMr. Hart said it would be.โ
โAnd you believe him? Donโt let him fool you,โ I warned. โIf it doesnโt get done by the deadline, youโre the one whoโll get penalized. Theyโll dock your bonus, not his.โ
Demi coughed. โI think weโll be fine. Weโre already testing in Section D, and everythingโs running smoothlyโno new issues so far. Honestly, itโs just been about checking things off the list every day.โ
She clicked her tongue. โItโs so weird, though. When you were still around, there were always issues popping up. Like, every other night, youโd be rushing to Mr. Hartโs hotel room to fix something. But ever since you left, everythingโs been smooth sailing. Now Iโm just over here, praying something goes wrong so I canโฆ you knowโฆ hehehe.โ She was indulging in naughty daydreams again.
I cut her off. โMaybe Iโm just a bad omen. Mr. Hart and I never clicked, so we had constant issues. But now that Iโm out of the picture, everythingโs perfect.โ
โHmph,โ Demi sounded unconvinced. โYouโre not fooling me. I think thereโs something going on between you two. Come on, be realโdid you and Mr. Hart have a littleโฆ secret arrangement?โ
Thinking of our fake relationship, I felt a twinge of guilt but dismissed it. โYouโre talking nonsense.โ
โDonโt hide it from me! Honestly, if something did happen between you and Mr. Hart, Iโd totally support it,โ Demi said, overly excited.
โNothing happened, so stop making things up,โ I shot back.
โWell, Mr. Hartโs moved out of the hotel,โ Demi said, her voice secretive. โWord is, he rented a place.โ
I feigned ignorance. โOh, really?โ
โYeah, and get thisโheโs sticking around Seavora for a while. Apparently, heโs looking into his fatherโs death.โ Demiโs voice dropped. โDo you know anything about that?โ
I honestly didnโt. When Hayden mentioned getting a place, I had no idea it was because of his fatherโs accident.
โI heard he died in a car crash.โ
Iโd lost my parents the same way. Hearing about Haydenโs situation made my chest tighten.
I made an excuse to end the call. After hanging up, I sat staring at the family photo on the wall. It was from years agoโme and my parents, all smiling. But a thought crept in, one I hadnโt considered before: Was my parentsโ accident really just an accident?
I sat lost in thought until I realized it was almost seven. Still no sound from across the hall. Worried, I called Hayden, but he didnโt answer. Was he delayed? Or had he canceled our plans?
Not wanting to wait, I grabbed my wrapped gift and decided to go to the Johnstonsโ alone. But as I stepped out of my apartment, I noticed Haydenโs door was slightly ajar. He was home? How had I missed him?
My curiosity overcame me. I walked over and gently pushed the door open. โHayโโ The rest of his name died in my throat as I froze, stunned by what I saw inside.
