Chapter 157

โ€œI figured if you were in a hurry, youโ€™d come looking for me, so I left it open for you,โ€ Hayden replied casually.

And yet, like an idiot, I asked, โ€œSo you came out like that on purpose?โ€

His Adamโ€™s apple bobbed. โ€œNo, I heard my phone ringing and came out to get it. I didnโ€™t expectโ€ฆ well, the timingโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYeah, just perfect timing,โ€ I muttered, adding silently, At least he had a great body.

On the way to the Johnstonsโ€™ residence, Hayden remained quiet. I figured he was probably nervous. โ€œWhen we get there, all you have to do is say hello. Iโ€™ll handle any awkward questions.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ he nodded.

โ€œAnd if Jace is there and tries to be a jerk, donโ€™t hold back,โ€ I added.

โ€œGot it.โ€

โ€œOh, and one more thingโ€”we should get our story straight. Weโ€™ll say we met in Chiverton, andโ€ฆ youโ€™re interested in meโ€ฆ so you followed me here.โ€ My face heated.

โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll have any trouble with that.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ I blinked, understanding dawning slowly.

After that, silence stretched between us, tense and heavy. My nerves frayed as I drove. I must have been more anxious than I realized, because when the car in front of me braked suddenly, I nearly rear-ended it.

Hayden reacted instantly. His hand shot out, gripping the steering wheel and yanking it sharply to the side, avoiding a collision.

By the time we stopped, I was frozen in shock. His reflexes were so quick, it seemed unreal.

โ€œFocus when you drive,โ€ Hayden scolded gently. โ€œA car accident isnโ€™t the worst thing, but what if you got hurt?โ€ Once the car ahead moved again, he relinquished control.

Iโ€™d been driving for three years, but right then, I felt like a complete novice.

We drove in silence for a while, my pulse finally calming. Out of curiosity, I asked, โ€œYour driving skills are amazing. Were you the designated driver in the army or something?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

I glanced over, intrigued. โ€œThen what did you do?โ€

โ€œSpecial forces.โ€

I didnโ€™t know much about it, but Iโ€™d seen enough movies to understandโ€”special forces were the guys who charged headfirst into danger, always looking incredibly cool. And Hayden? Yeah, he definitely looked incredibly cool. There was an unshakeable toughness about him, rare these days.

โ€œSo, whyโ€™d you leave the military? Why not become a SWAT officer?โ€ My curiosity was piqued.

Hayden hesitated. Then Demiโ€™s words came to mind. Could this be connected to his fatherโ€™s accident?

I tried a gentler approach. โ€œHayden, youโ€™ve never mentioned your parents or siblings. Can you tell me a little about them? Just in case the Johnstons askโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMy parents are both gone,โ€ he interrupted. โ€œMy father died in a car accident while driving his boss and his bossโ€™s wife. None of them survived,โ€ he said, his gaze meeting mine.

My heart lurched. Both my parents died in a car accident too. Hearing him say that hit me hard. โ€œMy mother passed away afterward. She was sick for yearsโ€ฆ grief destroyed her,โ€ Haydenโ€™s voice softened.

I could see his pain and immediately regretted bringing it up. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think my fatherโ€™s car accident was an accident,โ€ Hayden added.
