Chapter 16

โ€œKeira, please donโ€™t get the wrong idea.โ€

Tanyaโ€™s words almost made me laugh. Remembering her earlier comments about her โ€œboyfriendโ€™sโ€ bedding preferences, it was clear she meant Jace.

โ€œIs this for Jace?โ€ I asked, glancing at the bed linens sheโ€™d chosen. Blue and grayโ€”totally his favorite colors. But that was then. Now, thanks to me, his taste had brightened considerably.

Tanya bit her lip, hesitating before shaking her head. โ€œNo, donโ€™t get the wrong idea, itโ€™s for my brother.โ€

I was too tired for her games, so I cut to the chase. โ€œSo Jace is moving in with you now?โ€ Didnโ€™t he say he couldnโ€™t let Tanyaโ€™s baby get hurt? Watching over her seemed like the next logical step.

โ€œHow can you say that?โ€ Tanya snapped.

โ€œYouโ€™re even buying his bed linens. How can I not say that?โ€ I shot back, mocking her.

โ€œYouโ€™re too jealous. Jace wonโ€™t like that,โ€ she replied, making me laugh.

โ€œWhy are you laughing?โ€ Her innocent, wary eyes were fixed on mine.

I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. โ€œEven if Jace likes me, no one can resist being seduced.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be so harsh,โ€ Tanya snapped, her face flushing.

โ€œIsnโ€™t that the case? Yesterday, you said you came to the company to explain things to me, but you really wanted to see Jace, right?โ€ Even though I hadnโ€™t thought about it last night and slept well, the truth became clear when I woke up. Tanya showing up at the company, deliberately getting hit by a car, making Jace worry and carry her in front of everyoneโ€”it was all part of her plan.

Tanya widened her eyes, feigning innocence, and shook her head. โ€œHow can you think that of me?โ€

โ€œThen explain why Jace was at the cafรฉ yesterday?โ€ I demanded.

Tanya fell silent, a hint of embarrassment in her eyes as I exposed her.

โ€œIf you want to be with Jace, do it on your own. Donโ€™t use me as a stepping stone. Andโ€ฆโ€ I paused, then continued, โ€œIโ€™ve already broken up with him.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Tanya looked genuinely shocked.

โ€œThanks to you,โ€ I added.

โ€œBy the way, the dinner with the foie gras the other nightโ€”I paid for it. If weโ€™re splitting the bill, you owe me a third, or you can pay Jaceโ€™s share too.โ€ I held out my phone.

Tanyaโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œI donโ€™t have any money in my digital wallet right now.โ€

I didnโ€™t believe her and was a bit surprised.

โ€œSince Desmondโ€™s accident, no one has been giving me money. Otherwise, I wouldnโ€™t be using Jaceโ€™s card,โ€ Tanya said pitifully.

Whether true or not, insisting on the money would make me seem heartless.

โ€œForget it then,โ€ I said, pulling back my phone.

But Tanya stopped me. โ€œHow about thisโ€”Iโ€™ll add you and transfer it to you later.โ€

โ€œNo need!โ€

โ€œNo, I insist,โ€ Tanya persisted, pulling out her phone.

Seeing her determination, I had a thought and opened my phone for her to scan my QR code. As she sent the friend request, I said, โ€œYou just want to add me so you can post stuff to disgust me, right?โ€

Tanyaโ€™s eyes lit up for a moment. โ€œKeira, donโ€™t think so badly of people.โ€

โ€œHopefully, you prove me wrong,โ€ I replied, putting my phone away and walking off.
