Chapter 16
โKeira, please donโt get the wrong idea.โ
Tanyaโs words almost made me laugh. Remembering her earlier comments about her โboyfriendโsโ bedding preferences, it was clear she meant Jace.
โIs this for Jace?โ I asked, glancing at the bed linens sheโd chosen. Blue and grayโtotally his favorite colors. But that was then. Now, thanks to me, his taste had brightened considerably.
Tanya bit her lip, hesitating before shaking her head. โNo, donโt get the wrong idea, itโs for my brother.โ
I was too tired for her games, so I cut to the chase. โSo Jace is moving in with you now?โ Didnโt he say he couldnโt let Tanyaโs baby get hurt? Watching over her seemed like the next logical step.
โHow can you say that?โ Tanya snapped.
โYouโre even buying his bed linens. How can I not say that?โ I shot back, mocking her.
โYouโre too jealous. Jace wonโt like that,โ she replied, making me laugh.
โWhy are you laughing?โ Her innocent, wary eyes were fixed on mine.
I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. โEven if Jace likes me, no one can resist being seduced.โ
โDonโt be so harsh,โ Tanya snapped, her face flushing.
โIsnโt that the case? Yesterday, you said you came to the company to explain things to me, but you really wanted to see Jace, right?โ Even though I hadnโt thought about it last night and slept well, the truth became clear when I woke up. Tanya showing up at the company, deliberately getting hit by a car, making Jace worry and carry her in front of everyoneโit was all part of her plan.
Tanya widened her eyes, feigning innocence, and shook her head. โHow can you think that of me?โ
โThen explain why Jace was at the cafรฉ yesterday?โ I demanded.
Tanya fell silent, a hint of embarrassment in her eyes as I exposed her.
โIf you want to be with Jace, do it on your own. Donโt use me as a stepping stone. Andโฆโ I paused, then continued, โIโve already broken up with him.โ
โWhat?โ Tanya looked genuinely shocked.
โThanks to you,โ I added.
โBy the way, the dinner with the foie gras the other nightโI paid for it. If weโre splitting the bill, you owe me a third, or you can pay Jaceโs share too.โ I held out my phone.
Tanyaโs expression darkened. โI donโt have any money in my digital wallet right now.โ
I didnโt believe her and was a bit surprised.
โSince Desmondโs accident, no one has been giving me money. Otherwise, I wouldnโt be using Jaceโs card,โ Tanya said pitifully.
Whether true or not, insisting on the money would make me seem heartless.
โForget it then,โ I said, pulling back my phone.
But Tanya stopped me. โHow about thisโIโll add you and transfer it to you later.โ
โNo need!โ
โNo, I insist,โ Tanya persisted, pulling out her phone.
Seeing her determination, I had a thought and opened my phone for her to scan my QR code. As she sent the friend request, I said, โYou just want to add me so you can post stuff to disgust me, right?โ
Tanyaโs eyes lit up for a moment. โKeira, donโt think so badly of people.โ
โHopefully, you prove me wrong,โ I replied, putting my phone away and walking off.
