Chapter 166
I spotted a dessert truck and immediately ordered my favorite: iced coffee jelly. Hayden glanced at my cup, frowning.
โWhat? You donโt like it?โ I asked, smirking.
โToo much cold stuff is bad for your stomach,โ he said seriously.
I laughed. โWow, look at you being all considerate. Are you sure youโve never had a girlfriend before?โ
โNope,โ he replied confidently.
I shot him a skeptical look. โI have a little sister to take care of, so I know a few things,โ he added, and I paused mid-bite.
Wait, what? He has a sister? Heโd never mentioned her before. Suddenly, these lyrics popped into my head:
Talkinโ all that, but I know youโre caught. Every girlโs just โlike a sisโ? Boy, you ainโt slick, canโt play me like this.
It was as if Hayden could read my mind, because he quickly said, โMy actual sister. Same mom, same dad.โ
I returned to my coffee jelly. โYouโve never mentioned her.โ
โI just never found the right moment,โ Hayden said, taking a bite of my coffee jelly. I watched him grimace slightly. He didnโt like it. Jace hadnโt liked it either. Out of spite, he used to say coffee jelly was invented to torture people. The thought of Jace left a sour taste in my mouth. โIf you donโt like it, donโt force yourself. Choose something else.โ
โItโs fine. Itโs just a little cold,โ Hayden said, locking eyes with me. โItโs late, and this cold stuff wonโt sit well with your stomach.โ
I remained silent, opting for defiance. Hayden must have sensed my mood, because he dropped the subject. We ate in quiet tension.
โRea,โ a familiar voice, surprised and slightly confused, called from behind me.
I turned to see Steve, a perfectly made-up girl on his arm.
โHey, Steve,โ I greeted him.
โOut here enjoying some street food, huh?โ Steve asked, not noticing Hayden.
Before I could answer, Haydenโs spoon slid into my bowl, scooping up a bite of my coffee jelly. As he tasted it, he commented, โItโs too cold. You shouldnโt eat so much.โ
Steveโs eyes widened as he glanced between us, clearly perplexed. Knowing his connection to Jace, I smiled slightly and said, โIโm here with my boyfriend.โ I casually linked my arm through Haydenโs. He played along smoothly, nodding at Steve as if this were perfectly normal.
โItโs you?โ Steve finally recognized Hayden. Theyโd seen each other at the amusement park.
Hayden nodded silently. Steve looked utterly stunned. Shaking his head, he blurted, โRea, whatโs going on here? Explain.โ
โThereโs not much to explain. Iโm dating him. And tonight, we had dinner at the Johnston residence. Matthew and Lindey invited us,โ I said, emphasizing this wasn't casual. โThis is way too fast, donโt you think?โ Steve sounded incredulous.
I smirked. Jace had hooked up with Tanya before weโd even officially broken up. Wasnโt that faster?
โDidnโt you tell me to move on? Have you forgotten already?โ I retorted.
Steve scratched his head, laughing. โI knew you werenโt as soft as you looked. Guess I was rightโyouโve got some bite.โ He gave Hayden another look, then said, โGood choice.โ
I knew Steve had my back in this little revenge plot against Jace. Heโd been a true friend through all the drama.
โAlright, you two have fun. Bring this guy by my place sometimeโweโll see if heโs got what it takes,โ Steve grinned, walking away with his companion.
