Chapter 181
I went to see Lena, and luckily, she was home. โWhat was with the late-night call? I was exhausted after surgery and didn't call back. Were you sick?โ Lena asked, remembering the missed call only upon seeing me.
I kicked off my shoes and wandered across the carpet. โIf I were really sick, Iโd probably be dead by now.โ
She wrapped an arm around my shoulders. โWhatโs up? Are you mad?โ
โNo, I know youโre busy. It was nothing, really,โ I said, deciding against mentioning Haydenโs illness.
Lena wasnโt convinced. โYou donโt call me in the middle of the night for nothing.โ
โIt was about Hayden,โ I finally admitted. I didnโt want her to think it was something worse.
She handed me half her freshly made watermelon juice. โHeโs a catch. If you donโt lock him down, youโll regret it.โ
My mind was still reeling from Jace. I took a sip of juice. โJace and I are officially done.โ
Lena scoffed. โWerenโt you two done forever ago?โ
I stared blankly. โThis time, itโs for real.โ
Lena caught my mood and clinked her glass against mine. โCongrats!โ
The word made me laugh. โJace was good to me. Why are you so happy?โ
โNo matter how good he was to me, if he wasnโt good to you, whatโs the point?โ Lena said, again proving why she was my best friend.
โCome on, forget about him. Drink your juice, then weโll grab some good food,โ Lena said, raising her glass.
โIโm not in the mood,โ I refused.
But Lena wasnโt taking no for an answer. She dragged me out the door. โAfter we eat, weโre going bar-hopping to check out some hot guys.โ
Out of her white coat, Lena transformed into a full-fledged city girl. She was the perfect example of โdonโt judge a book by its cover.โ
She mentioned a new French restaurant, and she was taking me for foie gras. As luck would have it, the restaurant was next to the cafรฉ where Tanya wanted to meet.
Before I even got out of the car, I spotted Tanya through the window. She was staring blankly, lookingโฆ lost. Honestly, she looked pathetic.
It had been two hours since she called and texted. She hadnโt been bluffing about waiting. Remembering her message about something important, my curiosity won out. Plus, I knew I wouldnโt enjoy my meal if she remained there.
I nodded toward the cafรฉ. โIโm going to talk to her. You go ahead and order.โ
โGo for it,โ Lena said, offering no resistance. She knew Tanya was pregnant, and in Lenaโs eyes, regardless of adult drama, the child didn't deserve to be involved.
When I sat down, Tanya blinked, surprised Iโd actually come.
โDidnโt think you were coming,โ she said sarcastically.
โIโm here for the babyโs sake,โ I replied bluntly.
Tanya offered a bitter smile. โSit down. Would you like something? Coffee orโโ
โNo, thanks. Just get to the pointโI have dinner plans,โ I interrupted.
Tanya seemed awkward, trying to appear calm and content, but her strained smile betrayed her.
โAlright, what did you want to talk about? Is this about Jace?โ I asked directly.
Tanya lowered her head, glancing at her belly. After a moment, she looked up. โKeira, do Jaceโs parents like kids?โ She added, โDo you think theyโd accept the child Iโm carrying?โ
