Chapter 185

โ€œNot yet, but sheโ€™s scheduled it. Let me check the time,โ€ Lena said, pausing. โ€œItโ€™s set for eleven.โ€

I glanced at the clock. It was already ten.

โ€œDid she say why?โ€ I asked.

โ€œNope, just said she didnโ€™t want it anymore. She signed the papers herself. The fetus is over three months along, so itโ€™s not a quick procedureโ€”itโ€™s a termination,โ€ Lena explained.

Even though Iโ€™ve never been a mother, hearing that made my chest tighten. โ€œStall it for now. Iโ€™ll reach out to Jace.โ€

โ€œYou sure you want to get involved?โ€ Lena asked.

I hesitated. โ€œI saw her yesterday, and now sheโ€™s doing this. If I donโ€™t tell Jace, heโ€™ll never forgive me. And besidesโ€ฆโ€ This baby was the last piece of Desmondโ€™s bloodline.

I hung up and immediately called Jace. He didnโ€™t answer at first. Unsurprisingly, considering Iโ€™d recently distanced myself. I figured he wouldnโ€™t want to talk.

Just as I was about to hang up and try a different number, he answered, his voice icy. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œTanyaโ€™s getting an abortion. Sheโ€™s at Lenaโ€™s hospital,โ€ I said bluntly.

โ€œWhat?โ€ His voice shook.

โ€œThe procedureโ€™s in an hour. You can still make it if you go now,โ€ I said, then hung up before he could respond.

Even after telling him, something felt wrong. So, I went to the hospital. Pulling into the lot, I saw Jace sprinting from his car toward the maternity ward, looking panicked.

I rushed over, but before I reached the ward, Lena grabbed my arm. โ€œDid he stop it?โ€ I asked.

Lena pulled me aside, her expression serious. โ€œThereโ€™s some drama. Youโ€™ll want to hear this.โ€

She led me to the stairwell. From there, we overheard Tanya and Jace arguing heatedly.

โ€œWhy are you getting rid of the baby? This is Desmondโ€™s only bloodline left. Who said you could do this?โ€ Jaceโ€™s voice was low, almost a growl.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Tanya retorted sharply, her voice a far cry from its usual sweetness. โ€œBecause I want to be with you.โ€

A heavy silence followed. Jace remained silent.

Tanyaโ€™s voice softened. โ€œJace, if I keep this baby, your family will never accept me. Desmondโ€™s parents donโ€™t want it either. So why should I?โ€

โ€œBut if you go through with it, Desmondโ€™s bloodline is gone,โ€ Jace said, his voice shaking.

โ€œAnd if I keep the baby, I canโ€™t be with you. What do you want me to do?โ€ Tanya asked.

In that moment, the selfishness of people, always prioritizing themselves, hit me hard.

โ€œIf you get rid of the baby, does that mean weโ€™ll be together?โ€ Jace asked.

Through the cracked stairwell door, I saw Tanya reach for Jaceโ€™s sleeve, but he pulled away. โ€œTanya, you know who I really want.โ€

โ€œBut you and Keira are over,โ€ Tanya said, her voice cracking, tears welling.

โ€œKeira and I might be done, but that doesnโ€™t mean thereโ€™s a future for us either.โ€ Jaceโ€™s words struck Tanya hard. Her face crumbled.

Her lips trembled as she whispered, โ€œIf you donโ€™t want me, then what am I supposed to do?โ€

โ€œTanya, Iโ€™ve told youโ€”Iโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re taken care of, financially and all that. But I canโ€™t give youโ€”โ€ Jace began, but Tanya interrupted.

Shaking her head, she said, โ€œWhat about a man? I need someone who loves me, someone to hold me at night. Are you gonna give me that too?โ€

Jace stiffened, remaining silent.

โ€œJace, if you hadnโ€™t kissed me, Desmond wouldnโ€™t have seen, and he wouldnโ€™t have driven off and crashed. Now, Iโ€™m left with nothing. No Desmond, no support, nothing. You ruined my happiness, so youโ€™re the one who has to fix it.โ€

I froze, completely shocked. Soโ€ฆ Desmondโ€™s death was because of Jace. That was why heโ€™d been looking after her all this time.
