Chapter 185
โNot yet, but sheโs scheduled it. Let me check the time,โ Lena said, pausing. โItโs set for eleven.โ
I glanced at the clock. It was already ten.
โDid she say why?โ I asked.
โNope, just said she didnโt want it anymore. She signed the papers herself. The fetus is over three months along, so itโs not a quick procedureโitโs a termination,โ Lena explained.
Even though Iโve never been a mother, hearing that made my chest tighten. โStall it for now. Iโll reach out to Jace.โ
โYou sure you want to get involved?โ Lena asked.
I hesitated. โI saw her yesterday, and now sheโs doing this. If I donโt tell Jace, heโll never forgive me. And besidesโฆโ This baby was the last piece of Desmondโs bloodline.
I hung up and immediately called Jace. He didnโt answer at first. Unsurprisingly, considering Iโd recently distanced myself. I figured he wouldnโt want to talk.
Just as I was about to hang up and try a different number, he answered, his voice icy. โYes?โ
โTanyaโs getting an abortion. Sheโs at Lenaโs hospital,โ I said bluntly.
โWhat?โ His voice shook.
โThe procedureโs in an hour. You can still make it if you go now,โ I said, then hung up before he could respond.
Even after telling him, something felt wrong. So, I went to the hospital. Pulling into the lot, I saw Jace sprinting from his car toward the maternity ward, looking panicked.
I rushed over, but before I reached the ward, Lena grabbed my arm. โDid he stop it?โ I asked.
Lena pulled me aside, her expression serious. โThereโs some drama. Youโll want to hear this.โ
She led me to the stairwell. From there, we overheard Tanya and Jace arguing heatedly.
โWhy are you getting rid of the baby? This is Desmondโs only bloodline left. Who said you could do this?โ Jaceโs voice was low, almost a growl.
โWhy?โ Tanya retorted sharply, her voice a far cry from its usual sweetness. โBecause I want to be with you.โ
A heavy silence followed. Jace remained silent.
Tanyaโs voice softened. โJace, if I keep this baby, your family will never accept me. Desmondโs parents donโt want it either. So why should I?โ
โBut if you go through with it, Desmondโs bloodline is gone,โ Jace said, his voice shaking.
โAnd if I keep the baby, I canโt be with you. What do you want me to do?โ Tanya asked.
In that moment, the selfishness of people, always prioritizing themselves, hit me hard.
โIf you get rid of the baby, does that mean weโll be together?โ Jace asked.
Through the cracked stairwell door, I saw Tanya reach for Jaceโs sleeve, but he pulled away. โTanya, you know who I really want.โ
โBut you and Keira are over,โ Tanya said, her voice cracking, tears welling.
โKeira and I might be done, but that doesnโt mean thereโs a future for us either.โ Jaceโs words struck Tanya hard. Her face crumbled.
Her lips trembled as she whispered, โIf you donโt want me, then what am I supposed to do?โ
โTanya, Iโve told youโIโll make sure youโre taken care of, financially and all that. But I canโt give youโโ Jace began, but Tanya interrupted.
Shaking her head, she said, โWhat about a man? I need someone who loves me, someone to hold me at night. Are you gonna give me that too?โ
Jace stiffened, remaining silent.
โJace, if you hadnโt kissed me, Desmond wouldnโt have seen, and he wouldnโt have driven off and crashed. Now, Iโm left with nothing. No Desmond, no support, nothing. You ruined my happiness, so youโre the one who has to fix it.โ
I froze, completely shocked. Soโฆ Desmondโs death was because of Jace. That was why heโd been looking after her all this time.
