Chapter 213
I had no idea what Jace wanted, so I remained silent, letting the silence stretch. He didn't wait long, however.
โMy parents canโt stand Tanya, especially my mother. Do you thinkโฆ maybe you could say something nice about her to help?โ
Seriously? Was he serious? Asking me to speak favorably of Tanya? He'd either lost his mind or thought I was a complete pushover.
โIf you really want me to say something, it wonโt be anything good,โ I retorted, making no pretense of calm.
โRea, Iโโ
โJace, Iโm not a saint. Iโm definitely not the bigger person here. And Tanya? She means nothing to me. So why would I go out of my way to say something nice about her?โ I snapped.
Jaceโs voice cut through the silence. โAre you acting like this because youโre jealous?โ
I let out a dry laugh. โOh, so thatโs what this is about? Youโre trying to gauge my jealousy? Well, let me save you the troubleโIโm not. Actually, Iโm rather relieved. Relieved I figured you out sooner rather than later.โ
Jace sighed. โThe only thing I gave Tanya was a title. I owe her that much, but honestly, thereโs nothing between us.โ
I frowned, already over it. โThatโs your problem, Jace. Not mine.โ
โBut I donโt have anyone else to talk to,โ he said, sounding frustrated, almost desperate.
Hearing him like thisโso defeatedโwas strange. Heโd always been so arrogant, so self-assured.
But honestly, none of that mattered anymore. Whatever mess he was in? Not my problem. We were both adults, and he had to face the consequences of his own actions.
โYeah, well, Iโm rather busy,โ I said, pausing before hanging up.
I drove to the repair shop, picked up my car, and went straight to Lenaโs. Hayden hadnโt contacted me in a few days, but I assumed he knew I was busy with Yuna.
Demi had texted earlier, saying the lighting tests were nearly finished. Apparently, Hayden had been pulling all-nighters, fine-tuning the lights. His free time had vanished into sleepless nights.
When I arrived at Lenaโs, she looked terribleโher cold had really knocked her out. It wasnโt just a sniffle; this flu had laid her low for days. She was finally getting a much-needed rest at home.
โIโm still contagious, you know. Stay back or Iโll give it to you,โ she teased upon seeing me.
I hugged her anyway. โGo ahead, I dare you.โ
She playfully smacked my arm. โDonโt think I donโt know why youโre acting so reckless. Youโre not even married to Hayden yet, and youโre already spoiling his little sister like this. Youโre the first future sister-in-law Iโve seen whoโs thisโฆextra.โ
Since she mentioned Yuna, I didnโt try to hide my curiosity. โSo, any progress?โ
Lena remained silent, so I tilted my head. โDonโt tell me you still havenโt worked up the nerve, Lena. This is seriousโa matter of life and death.โ
โDo I look that helpless?โ she retorted.
My eyes lit up. โYou reached out! What did he say?โ
Lena fell silent again, and I was losing patience. I shook her arm. โCome on, spill! What did he say? Can he do it?โ
She sighed. โHe saidโฆ heโd be back in a few days and would contact me then.โ
I narrowed my eyes, unconvinced. โThatโs it? Just that?โ
Lena shrugged. โYep. Just that one sentence.โ
โJust one sentence?โ I pressed.
She swatted my hand away. โIโm serious, thatโs all he said. Heโll be back next Tuesday, and when heโs here, Iโll take you to meet him. Donโt forget to bring that girlโs medical records.โ
โWait, Iโm going too?โ I blinked, surprised.
Lena raised an eyebrow. โWhat, you thought Iโd go alone?โ
I nodded firmly. โYep. Youโre going solo. Iโm not going to be the third wheel.โ
Lena was quiet for a moment, then said softly, โThat perfect someone he had? She works with him. Theyโre in the same group.โ
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut.
Lena offered a sad smile. โSo, yeahโฆ thereโs nothing to hope for. We were never meant to be.โ
