Chapter 226

โ€œHuh?โ€ Hayden looked at me, eyebrows furrowed. I stepped closer, close enough to smell the clean, soapy scent clinging to him, as if heโ€™d just showered. It smelled wonderfully familiar, reminiscent of my childhoodโ€”a time when my parents were still alive and we used bar soap for everything. Now, with all the fancy body washes, the scent of real bar soap is rare. โ€œAre you hiding something from me?โ€ I asked.

He frowned, scrutinizing me. โ€œYou alright? How much did you drink?โ€

Iโ€™d only had one drinkโ€”barely enough to feel anythingโ€”but heโ€™d noticed. I laughed, playfully tugging his shirt collar. โ€œCome on, Hayden Hart, donโ€™t play dumb. Are you hiding your real identity? Secretly wealthy? Maybe even the mastermind behind OceanixCorp?โ€

His jaw tightened. โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€ He stepped back, needing space.

โ€œOh, you really donโ€™t know, or are you just faking it? Messing with me?โ€ I pressed, closing the distance again, refusing to let him off the hook.

Hayden remained silent, his eyes locked on mine. We stood there, engaged in a silent standoff under the dim stairwell light. Images of Yunaโ€™s courtyard, her illness, and Haydenโ€™s appearance the first time we met flashed through my mind. I broke the stare, letting out a dry laugh. โ€œYouโ€™re too broke to be that guy, anyway.โ€

I released his shirt and turned to go, but he grabbed my arm. โ€œDid you drive home?โ€ I smiled. โ€œNah, I had a driver.โ€ I stuck out my tongue playfully. โ€œIโ€™m careful, you know. Donโ€™t want to put anyone else in danger.โ€ The cold look in his eyes softened. He patted my head gently. โ€œGood girl.โ€

It felt like he was comforting a child. I blinked. โ€œIโ€™m kinda jealous of Yuna.โ€

โ€œHmm?โ€

I forced a smile. โ€œShe must have been so spoiled by you growing up.โ€

Haydenโ€™s gaze intensified. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward his room. โ€œIโ€™m making you some honey chamomile tea.โ€

I wanted to refuse, but his hand was warm, and I couldn't resist. I let him lead me inside. Ugh, Iโ€™m such a sucker for this.

A few minutes later, he handed me a cup of tea. It was in a cartoon cat-shaped mugโ€”definitely a girlโ€™s cup. But Yuna wasnโ€™t hereโ€ฆ

โ€œWhose cup is this? I donโ€™t like using other peopleโ€™s things,โ€ I said, testing him.

โ€œItโ€™s yours. I bought it just for you.โ€ His words made my heart skip a beat, and my cheeks flushed.

I took a sip. The tea was sweet. It feltโ€ฆspoiled.

โ€œDonโ€™t drink alone anymore. Itโ€™s not safe,โ€ Hayden said.

โ€œI was with Steve. I told you, Iโ€™m fine with him around,โ€ I replied honestly.

His eyes darkened, but he remained silent. I took another sip of tea, then said, โ€œGuess who I had dinner with tonight?โ€

โ€œNot just Steve?โ€ His tone was odd, but I didnโ€™t think much of it.

โ€œCole Drago, Thorsten Dragoโ€™s son,โ€ I said casually.

Haydenโ€™s face fell. โ€œWhat are you trying to do?โ€

I pressed my lips together, considering whether to tell him Cole offered to introduce me to Thorsten. But Haydenโ€™s sharp look stopped me. โ€œKeira, I know what youโ€™re trying to find out, but stay out of this. Iโ€™ll take care of it.โ€
