Chapter 23
Tanyaโs face flushed red, then paled. Her act was pathetic. If she wanted to steal someoneโs fiancรฉ, she should own it. Jace gave her the house meant for me, after all. She could at least show some confidence. But no, she played shady games while pretending to be innocent. โReally, this bitch wants to have her cake and eat it too,โ I cursed inwardly.
โKeira, Jace wonโt like this behavior,โ Tanya dared to say.
I laughed. If I still cared about Jaceโs affection, Iโd be out of my mind. โKeep his affection for yourself,โ I retorted, shutting her down.
Tears welled in Tanyaโs eyes, and I was glad Gavin was there. Without him, her tears would have made things far too complicated.
โWhat do you mean? Arenโt you getting married today?โ Tanya asked, hope flickering in her eyes. Look at her, so ambitious.
Suddenly, I didnโt want to give her the satisfaction. โYeah, we are. Weโll get our certificate soon. Jace consulted an abbot about the best time, and he said 10:58. Supposedly, itโs to ensure a long and happy marriage with lots of kids.โ
The sparkle in Tanyaโs eyes vanished. Seeing her hopes dashed, I delivered another blow. โAfter Jace and I get our marriage license, make sure to send us a wedding gift.โ
Tanya stumbled, almost falling. Remembering her past theatrics, I added, โJace isnโt here to catch you if you fall.โ
My retort left Tanya speechless. She just bit her lipโa look that would definitely trigger a protective instinct in most men. Maybe thatโs how she snagged Jaceโs heart. But it didnโt matter anymore. From today on, Jace was just another person in my life.
Weirdly, it didnโt hurt as much as I thought it would. You donโt get over someone overnight. After Jaceโs repeated betrayals, todayโs incident didnโt break me any further.
โLetโs go, Gavin,โ I called, walking away.
โMs. Kay, this might be a misunderstanding. Letโs hear Mr. Johnstonโs explanation,โ Gavin pleaded as we stepped outside. He probably knew what my decision would be after seeing all this.
โIf you were me, would you believe his explanation?โ I asked, leaving Gavin silent. โDonโt tell Jace about this,โ I added, then left.
Back at the office, everyone was shocked to see me. โMs. Kay, isnโt today your big day with Mr. Johnston? Why are you here?โ
โJust remembered a few important things I need to wrap up,โ I replied casually, leaving them staring. Iโd always been on top of things at work, never slacking even though I was Jaceโs fiancรฉe.
โ[Youโre really setting the bar high,]โ Demi teased, adding a cute emoji.
I said nothing, staying focused on my tasks.
At ten, Jace called. โRea, where are you?โ
โIโm at the office.โ
He hesitated. โWhy are you still there? Iโll come get you.โ
โNo need. Weโre meeting at the clerkโs office, right? Iโll head over now. Just wait for me,โ I said, hanging up.
I sat in silence for a moment before grabbing my bag. However, I intentionally left the completed marriage license form in the drawer.
