Chapter 23

Tanyaโ€™s face flushed red, then paled. Her act was pathetic. If she wanted to steal someoneโ€™s fiancรฉ, she should own it. Jace gave her the house meant for me, after all. She could at least show some confidence. But no, she played shady games while pretending to be innocent. โ€œReally, this bitch wants to have her cake and eat it too,โ€ I cursed inwardly.

โ€œKeira, Jace wonโ€™t like this behavior,โ€ Tanya dared to say.

I laughed. If I still cared about Jaceโ€™s affection, Iโ€™d be out of my mind. โ€œKeep his affection for yourself,โ€ I retorted, shutting her down.

Tears welled in Tanyaโ€™s eyes, and I was glad Gavin was there. Without him, her tears would have made things far too complicated.

โ€œWhat do you mean? Arenโ€™t you getting married today?โ€ Tanya asked, hope flickering in her eyes. Look at her, so ambitious.

Suddenly, I didnโ€™t want to give her the satisfaction. โ€œYeah, we are. Weโ€™ll get our certificate soon. Jace consulted an abbot about the best time, and he said 10:58. Supposedly, itโ€™s to ensure a long and happy marriage with lots of kids.โ€

The sparkle in Tanyaโ€™s eyes vanished. Seeing her hopes dashed, I delivered another blow. โ€œAfter Jace and I get our marriage license, make sure to send us a wedding gift.โ€

Tanya stumbled, almost falling. Remembering her past theatrics, I added, โ€œJace isnโ€™t here to catch you if you fall.โ€

My retort left Tanya speechless. She just bit her lipโ€”a look that would definitely trigger a protective instinct in most men. Maybe thatโ€™s how she snagged Jaceโ€™s heart. But it didnโ€™t matter anymore. From today on, Jace was just another person in my life.

Weirdly, it didnโ€™t hurt as much as I thought it would. You donโ€™t get over someone overnight. After Jaceโ€™s repeated betrayals, todayโ€™s incident didnโ€™t break me any further.

โ€œLetโ€™s go, Gavin,โ€ I called, walking away.

โ€œMs. Kay, this might be a misunderstanding. Letโ€™s hear Mr. Johnstonโ€™s explanation,โ€ Gavin pleaded as we stepped outside. He probably knew what my decision would be after seeing all this.

โ€œIf you were me, would you believe his explanation?โ€ I asked, leaving Gavin silent. โ€œDonโ€™t tell Jace about this,โ€ I added, then left.

Back at the office, everyone was shocked to see me. โ€œMs. Kay, isnโ€™t today your big day with Mr. Johnston? Why are you here?โ€

โ€œJust remembered a few important things I need to wrap up,โ€ I replied casually, leaving them staring. Iโ€™d always been on top of things at work, never slacking even though I was Jaceโ€™s fiancรฉe.

โ€œ[Youโ€™re really setting the bar high,]โ€ Demi teased, adding a cute emoji.

I said nothing, staying focused on my tasks.

At ten, Jace called. โ€œRea, where are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m at the office.โ€

He hesitated. โ€œWhy are you still there? Iโ€™ll come get you.โ€

โ€œNo need. Weโ€™re meeting at the clerkโ€™s office, right? Iโ€™ll head over now. Just wait for me,โ€ I said, hanging up.

I sat in silence for a moment before grabbing my bag. However, I intentionally left the completed marriage license form in the drawer.
